Just wondering if any one has ever bred or know how these dogs hunt. I have aquired two gyps that are 9 months old that came from a hog dog hunter in hawaii. They are half leapard, quarter bmc, and quarter fila. They bay really good in the pen and will shut a hog down when it breaks. i have not put them in the woods yet. They are the two best looking gyps you ever laid your eyes on if your a spotted dog man.Got feet the size of a dinner plate. Just wondering if anybody has ever dealt with a fila cross before. One thing that i have noticed on these pups is that they are really easy going dogs. Easy to catch,no aggressive behavior to other dogs, and  want to please me. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

I really cant imagine a Fila being very good. Now as there is only a 1/4 I guess but baying a hog is alot different than hunting one.

If you could find a good one. Most of them today suck. I trained one about 10 years ago for man trailing (bite ate the end of the track) and he was bad ass. Cold nosed. I had him running up to 15 hour old tracks.
Most of them I have tested since then I would not feed.

The F1 cross would have been bull mastiff/ Blood Hound. Then after that they were crossed with each other to make the filla breed.

Thats correct. They used them to track and catch run a way slaves. Problem with the breed today is two fold. 1 they are not worked, therefore selection is based on what? and two they are suppose to have a natural aggression toward strangers. They even have a spanish or Portuguese word describing the trait.
Breed judges want to see this when judging. Problem is there is a fine line between a dog with this trait as it was intended and a weak nerved fear bitter. The judging od their conformation has leaned toward sloppy rather than athletic.

No personal experience but now and then you see crossed ones for sale here.  They were more common in the early 90's but seem to have died out a lot.  I thnk that kinda tells a story.

Dogs that bite are and should be culled.

Respect your opinion.  Just a different way that we do things.  We cull for shyness and biting / aggression (as much as for working ability) in all of our dogs; not just the curs and that wont change.  One growl and its game over here.  We have a lot of kids / people / strangers come and go from our place.  I don't want to worry that some panlicker is gonna bite someone.

thanks for your comments

We know a guy who uses a full blooded fila as a catchdog. She is real good. She is very protective of the family at home but wont bother anyone on the hunt. She is a big dog and looks like a real blocky, light tan bloodhound.

First let me say I have used plenty of off breeds for hog dogging so I’m not a purest. Heck I hunt with dogs out of sport protection lines but the breed isn’t naturally human aggressive. Filas are good dogs just wouldn’t think they would make good hunting dogs. "OJERIZA" is a trait Filas are supposed to carry which translates to “have a grudge against” or “sharp aversion” and it is used in conjunction with “towards strangers”.

In my personal humble opinion (backed with a sport protection background) it is the most naturally aggressive predominant breed. I believe one can get a dog to act out of its nature or genetic code but there is no chance for harm watching a bulldog compete in dock diving or a grey hound out treeing coon. But to finish if a pointer’s genetic code misfires he points at a tree stump for no reason where as the 200-pound fila eats your visiting cousin out on a hunt.

Would love to see a video a BMC actively biting a sleeve/ suit.

People in the sport protection world have bred dogs for generations upon generations solely to perform well in attack work and a very large amount get chased of the trial field every competition after a life of biting decoys many times a week in training clubs.  So I find it hard to believe that one could come flying off the bench and whip a man’s tail. Not denying there aren’t a handful of them about but it would be like saying, “sparkly hasn’t been trained to, and his bred hasn’t been breed tested for it, but I believe my Labrador would bay a hog up if I really needed him to. Sparky might bark at the hog from inside his fence and put on a real show but… I don't know.
