To the guys who strictly bay and shoot... not folks who carry a pistol just in case something happens... What caliber do you shoot. I am about to start a lot of hunting by myself for work, and think baying em up and sittin em down would be a hell of a lot easier than dealing with a catch dog(not to say my cd wont get used when I am hunting for fun!!!). But I am looking at either a 44 mag in a lever gun or a .357 in a lever gun... Which one and why?? Or any other cailbers that are easily accessible??? (My work will pay for my ammo if it is easy to get)

Depens where u hunt. when we hunt open places where some times it's hard 2 get close. I like 3030 or 357mag but when hunting in thick places I like 2 use. 22hornet or my 22mag. Depens how I'm feeling

44 or 45 also something to look at would be a 35 remington loaded with 357 bullets. I have a 35 in a marlin carbine and am really liking it so far have only shot a doe and a pig with it but man it is a beast with little kick.

Youth model .223 single shot, with sling and no scope. High velocity round drops 'em like a fly. Cheap and easy to find ammo. Very light weapon to carry around.
I used my sons a couple times. In fact that's the only gun I have ever carried hog hunting, and that maybe 3 times while working for a soy bean farm.

After getting dogs wrecked a couple times in the past few years by NOT having a gun or only having a .22 I invested in something with a little more ummpphhh. I don't shoot hogs that often but when I do have to shoot one I want him to go down..NOW! Most of the rifle calibers will work but in thick woods they are a pain to carry around. Handguns are good but I have never been that good a shot with a pistol. So I bought something in-between. Its a Rossi RanchHand in .44 caliber. I picked the .44 as I have shot several hogs with a .357 and had them run. That usually doesn't happen with a .44. I even had a buddy make a custom shoulder holster for it. You carry the gun angled across your chest, barrel down. Its out of the way walking and ducking under brush. The gun is too long to hang on your side and not get caught in vines, palmettos and such so I am trying it this way. I have yet to shoot a hog with it, we have been catching them, but I have shot it at a target and it DOES kick!   |

357 mag is my choice. I use 125 gr winchester factory ammo and I've never had a projectile exit. They kill runners or "squirters" that come back past you on the quad great too. For big boars aim for the head or armpit and its all over. Almost no kick and not too loud. 30/30's will exit sometimes.

We have used 44's for the past 10+ years and have not had any problems. If hog runs at you and you hit them with a 44 you are either going to knock them down or change their direction. Have never had one go through like you will with a 30-30. 357's are just too loud. Only problem I have had with a 44 is shooting hollowpoints ( which is all I use) shooting through brush and hit a twig the bullet will split and fragment into little pieces and could hit a dog. Has happened twice to me, both times with big boars in thick brush where the hogs were baying loose, my fault i should have waited for a better shot. And go with a marlin lever action and you won't be disappointed!

That Rossi Ranch Hand looks neat! Our local gun store has a pile of them for sale right now. I looked at one and wondered about recoil. I don't need one but they are interesting. Reminds me of a John Wayne movie.

depends on how big it is an if you shoot over them enough you know what to look for when you squeeze the trigger i wait till the hog jumps at my dogs cause i know they're gettin the hell outta there so i take the shoot then |
