I've been working pups with my Feist which I can call out. When he leaves the hog, the pup usually follows suit. I praise them and give them a break before hissing them back on the hog to bay for a while before calling them out again. It is easier on the easier to handle, softer dogs. I don't know if it will work in the woods but we will see.

A whip works real good. Most of my dogs can be called out of the woods with a whip too. Wouldn't recommend it if you want to bay and shoot tho.

The story behind the question is i put my two pups in the four acre pen at 4:30 yesterday and finally got the last one out about 8:30 last night. Everytime i would get close enough to think about grabbing the pup the hog would break. I need to work on some handle is the bottom line. Lol

Travis, I would do the weeedeater string trick, tie 10-15' to their collar. It has worked for me in the past on shy dogs. It should make it plenty easy to catch them when you are ready to call it quits for the day.

I know Mr. James told me one time while we were hunting that he hunted with a fella that had all of his trained to come out with a horn. He would wait til they were out of sight then blow the horn, if they continued going the wrong direction he would hit em with the shock collar. Mr. James said that every one of his dogs would come back when they heard the horn.I have been wanting to start doing this with mine to make it easier to gather em all back up.

It was time for bed!!!! Smiley i went back out there to try to get her about 8:00 and all was quiet until i called her. I guess she finally laid down with the hog until i called her. Then she was right back to baying. She has got the fire for sure.
