What makes a dog a climber? I've had a few in the past and they ended up on chains. I have cattle panel kennels now (8 X 16) and I really don't want to use chains again. The gyp I'm referring to is big and leggy, 60 lbs or so. I was surprised to find out she was a climber. She jumps and hooks the top of the panel and scoots on over. I'm going to add 4 ft of welded wire to the top of the panels on her kennel to fix the problem (I hope). Oh, her sister, a smaller gyp will do it occasionally to but not near as much.
The fact that she gets out only disturbs me a little bit because I know I can fix it. It also impresses me a little, I think it shows intelligence.
Anyway, just wondering what makes a dog want to climb when others are content.

Kevin. In the past two weeks that wendy pup i have has been out twice. No where she could have dug through only possibility was climbed out. I still wasnt convinced that was the case because its a 5ft. fence and shes only 7 months old. Anyway sunday i saw her she got her front two feet over and just pulled and climbed over. Looks like im going to have to put a hot wire around the top of mine.

Lol, yep, I may end up doing the same around my dog yard so I can keep letting them out every so often. Did she go straight to the pig pen?

Yep, I was kind of thinkin the same. Cattle panels on my pig pen too. If I don't get her kennel fixed I'm gonna end up with dead pigs.

well boy's i wouldn't own a dog that couldn't get over a fence .lol comes in handy in more ways than one while hunting for sure . kevein with the price of panels you can get you the cheapest little 3 mile charger and materials to run a hot wire around the top . if a dog wants out bad enough you can't make a fence high enough . i had a little walker male when i was just a wee one lol he could flat foot jump and catch the top rail on a 6 ' chainlink fence and go over .

A roof helps with that! I hear you. I built these kennels with that in mind. I used 8' - 4 X 4 post. Put the kennels together in a hurry because I had to. Just hadn't got around to the roof yet

Had yeller gyp do the same. She would climb a 6' kennel. Only thing that stoped her was a roof, till it blew off from a wind storm. Wife came hm from work n she was at the pig pen, she put on a cable lead so she could still nurse. I get hm, measure out enuf chain for her to get water n relieve herself, but give her to much. I got a call sayn she had hung herself. She finaly stoped climbing, but left 7 3.5wk old pups for me to nurse to term. A hot wire would fix the climbing, but i got a gyp who persists to dig. I cant catch her at it or i would shock her. Foot to butt aint workn either so i guess im gonna hav to burry some fencing. Any other ideas instead of waisting money on fencing that will just rust out?

I don't know about a dog climbing out of a kennel being a sure fire sign of it's intelligence. It is a sign that the dog is a sure fire pain in the butt.
Some dogs are smart enough to know you kenneled them because you didn't want them wandering around. Lol.
Put some form of roof on it or just chain that dog

I chain most of my dogs so climbing ain't the issue, one of my dogs digs constantly and I hate it.

I have so many good stories about smart dogs kennels and chains. I had a dog named turbo that would rub his snap on a tree until it would pop off. We watched him out the window he did this all the time. He became the yard dog. I came in from hunting one time and put the dogs on there chains i went to feed and two of my dogs had stretched themselves as far as they could at the end of there chains i relised I put them in the wrong spot not wear they normally go. Once I moved them they went and jumped in there barrels happy as they could be. Intelligence is all I can say.

I chained a dog in a kennel with a nice up and coming pup...long story short the the chain wrapped around the pups mid section and when I got back in town the pup was dead in a sitting position...so be careful about chaining a dog in a kennel with another dog...
I was thinking that to stop a climber a tight cable needs to run parallel along on the inside of the top of the kennel about 6 or 8 inches to the inside...I think the dog will hang up trying to go over and will eventually give up trying to climb out...

It is a pain. Five of my dogs will jump and climb out of my six foot tall kennels. I ran a hot wire on top of all the kennels and this put a stop to all but one of em. If she gets excited and wants out bad enough she will take the hit and come on over. lol
