Cody, Earl's is the NFR ~ of Hog Baying..... We plan for Earl's a in year advance, its our yearly vacation. Everyone has to have entry money and other things paid for in the month of Febuary, before the baying in March... It will be  more of a  monetary situation for people to attend a big show before Earl's. Maybe a big show in April.... this will give folks a chance to recoupe from Earl's.

Entry fees are no more than normal I'm assuming so the monetary demand isn't much different than a single day bay (its still cool enough to camp, don't spend money on hotel). The only difference is - added money to purse = more entries = more time needed for each event, hence three days instead of 1.

If there is $300-$500 added money to the single events and $500-$1000 added to Two dog events you WILL draw a crowd. Whatever month you chose.

That being said....a mid to late summer bay would ensure that your three day bay is HUGE!

Hog feed must be cheap where you are!  You should trying putting on a bay and adding that much extra money.  You barely make enough to pay the help , light bill, and keep the hogs in good shape .

Lol, I don't own a bay pen. If I did the money sure as heck wouldn't come out of MY POCKET!!!

Sponsors! Sponsors! Sponsors! Hotels, campgrounds, feed stores, magazines, vendors. A little bit of money from a dozen or so sponsors can add up quick.

Oh, and "paying help?Huh?". What happened to pals/family? Get some young boys with dogs or something and offer free pen practice time.

good luck on that ! not to many sponsors for a hog trial if any not much money donated. and people to work for free! haha you cant hardly pay people to work these days also it for a successful pen you need good pen help. hogs and dogs gotta be in and out quickly to keep show movin. on a big trial most the time when you put young fellas in there people get upset or board and dogs get hurt.

We arnt gonna go take our dogs out the same month as earls and take the chance of our dogs getting hurt or killed and loosing our entry fee money! We start looking forward to earls as soon as we leave the parking lot every year. It's our yearly vacation! I think if you wanna have a big baying, don't do it in march!

I figured others would eventually chime in.  Not only us but if your trying to draw a big crowd that would mean people out of state to and that's just more money out of pocket and juggling time off and kids time out of school twice in one month for them

i agree with all these statements,  but cody u do your thing run it how you want you may break the mold of people not doin good around big bays because of what spencer said. but hey you put enough added money in pot and you never know what will happen. Besides they may cancel earls right at last min. never know.

Cody, do what you want, but if you wanna draw more people from out of state, and all over Texas, do it after earls. If not then you will have a lot of locals like last time minus the ones from out of state. This is just my .02. I'm not scared to run my dogs, but I'm not gonna take the chance of getting our dogs hurt right before Earls, and I'm sure others feel the same way.

I agree with Spence, April would be a better turnout for a 3 day event. Unless you wanted to do a one day a few weeks before and then the 3 day in April,  Grin Jmo

Im not sure exactly what were going to be doing in march just yet but i have to take care of the things that need taken care of now and with all the rain ive had to move pigs to put them in better condition i have laid a pad in the pigs pen  and will be pouring concrete on the next dry day and roofing in the mean time if  your gonna have livestock you gotta takje care of them like they should be and healthier cleaner hogs means healthier cleaner bays, i believer the hogs should be taken care of just as good as our dogs, so i may be canceling the bay in february depending on the weather i know its only our second bay and already canceling one but i have to do whats best for all the animals, with that being said yeah feed is high were feeding 14% right now and buying it by the ton and it almost 900 a month then yeah you pay ur help and well its a labor of love right now and its hard finding good people that can work or will work, but no matter what we are shooting to have a pen that suits almost everyone and has healthy working stock i appreciate everyone being involved and giving there opinions cuz theres alot of you guys that have been doing 10x longer than i have and i use every piece of advice given so i appreciate it ill work something out for march
