Although i dont like to think about much else, there is life outside of hunting. I started Crossfit 3 years ago and nothing has been such a positive influence on my life. I hope to open my own gym soon.

CrossFit has quickly become known as the Sport of Fitness. It is described as: "functional movements, done at high intensity over various modal domains."  It blends functional movements such as all the Olympic lifts (cleans, jerks, snatches, squats, deadlifts) with gymnastic, body weight (pull ups, push ups, air squats, etc) or aerobic type movements( running or rowing)

I highly encourage all of my fellow hunters to give it a shot after the new year. Not only will it help prepare you for hunting, but it's good for life in general. Don't let the competition aspect or the "Crossfit Games" you see on ESPN discourage you into thinking this is simply a competitive sport. I work out daily at our gym with young kids, middle aged soccer moms and 60 year old grandma's. Not only does CF make you physically stronger, people grow  mentally leaps and bounds. Visit www.crossfit.com to see if there is a local box near you.

The beauty of crossfit is that it isn't a specialized sport, such as power lifting, triathlons, long distance runner, etc. Fitness through crossfit is defined as being "ready for the unknowable!" The whole basis for CrossFit Games and CrossFit competitions are to test any and all forms of fitness without having set parameters. So in order to succeed you must constantly work on weaknesses an strive to be good at everything. Basically be ready for anything.

In September a bunch of us traveled to Fort Worth to compete in a two day competition. There were 8 workouts over the course of two days. Competing against 55 other guys I got 15th. Here's a little recap of the weekend.

First WOD( workout of the day)

30 hang squat cleans at 155#, then you must strip your bar and run a 600 meter lap with your 45# weight bar. *also there was a 400'elevation change over the course of the run.. This was a burner, it took me 7:30 to complete.

WOD #2
7 min AMRAP(as many round possible)
500 meter Row to buy in:

Then 3 power snatch with 135#
Then 6 burpees over your bar

I got 6 rounds 5 burpees

WOD # 3
5 Rounds for time:
5 push jerk @ 155#
12 kettle bell snatches 53#
25 double unders

Took me 5:24

Wod#4 max effort stone to shoulder in 2 min.. 175# stone. 5 reps for me

WOD #5
Max Effort Broad Jump
3 attempts

WOD #6
Max Effort Muscle Ups in 2 min
I think I got 9

WOD # 7
Power Clean ladder from 185-305#. You get 45 seconds to try the lift and the then 15 seconds to move on to the next bar. I hurt my wrist and had to stop at 265#

WOD # 8
"21-15-9"
21 deadlift at 275 #
21 box jumps at 30"
21 kb push press at 53#
Then we repeated through at reps of 15 for each movement & then 9

Some scenery pictures

Our team of 2 girls and 2 guys took first as well

Hey TShelly,  I did my first Crossfit workout yesterday.  I did the Elizabeth WOD.  I'm going to a regulat gym not a Crossfit gym so, we don't have "ring dips".  I just used the regular dip aparatus wich I am sure is quite a bit easier but gotta start somewhere.  My time for all three rounds was 8:16.  Not too bad for a 1st time.  I haven't done cleans in over 15 yrs and I tell ya it feels like someone has been beating me between the shoulder blades with a hammer this morning.  LOL!

TShelly  --  good on you.  I like what you are doing.  Training easily becomes addictive.

I don't do Crossfit, but I see the benefits to you.  I run marathons.  In fact, I ran one on New Year's morning.  I run 60+ miles per week and cycle 75+ miles  ...  year round.  Like you, I am addicted to it.

Oh, the pics were nice too.  Congrats.

That is awesome!! They are slightly easier because the rings take more core muscles to stabilize, but as long as you go full depth, it's still a very similar WOD. I feel you on the cleans, when I first started the Olympic lifting part of CrossFit, it had been years in highschool since I had last done them. Good luck with it, just do what you can in the gym. You'll become more and more addicted as the days past. My top Elizabeth Time is 5:20. Good job on your first time, that is nice
