Buying, Selling, and Backing out. (Aka...Tire Kickers)

Just a curiosity mainly. From time to time I sell a couple random items around the place not necessarily animals.
The one thing that always rears its head even when it has plainly been requested up front is the dreaded....(I want it..will you hold it for me) request. This is not an unreasonable request by someone you know or have had dealings with ...but a complete stranger.......This ain't Wal-Mart and we ain't got lay-away...lol
Countless times I have experienced and have witnessed numerous ads that were the results of someone being gracious enough to take someone at their word and turn away other prospective buyers only to have them back out or just plain ole doesn't show.
My question is to these people...Why do you ask if you never intended to follow through?
Dont mind if you show up and its not what you were looking for or call ahead and cancel. Both understandable.
Tire kickers...........explain yourselves!

I can understand your frustration if you were leaving your house headed that way and the owner promised to hold until you arrived. But if not the case...cannot side with anyone but the owner due to the fact...the dog or property was listed publicly for sale to the first person that shows with the arranged compensation.
To many folks back out or change their minds without properly making notification and ultimately cause the seller to lose numerous amounts of prospective buyers.
I have also attempted to purchase items that were of a timely matter and they were sold before I could get off work or free to pick it up. But......I understood completely in the seller selling the item to someone who was able to show up first.
I get alot of these requests usually through main public forums mostly from younger individuals.
Even had a young man make contact four days in a row requesting to hold...only to find out he didn't even have the money to begin with.

Back when the horse market was better we raised and rode a few horses to sell. Didn't take me long to start offering a non-refundable deposit to hold anything. I'm not much on dealing with people over a sale, i guess thats why i usually done the riding and my wife handled the selling. Come to think of it tho i hardly ever got to see any of the cash

That's why I still have my garmin.. 20 people want you to hold it, and not one comes up with the money... Even a couple friends say they will get it Friday, when they get payed, when they get back in town, blah blah blah... Finally just say the hell with it and keep it... Then they call 2 weeks later ( after not answering any texts or calls ) asking if I still have it...

I have got to the point I specifically list this as Not An Option in the ad.
Never works though. Always have numerous requests and then when they are courtesly declined ...half get frustrated and act like I have violated their rights. Haha. The redonkulous part is how far out the requests will get. Up to a month away on a set of tires I had listed for sale.
I do however hold the item for them when they call and say...I am leaving my house and headed to you NOW. This situation ....without a doubt the item will be their when they arrive.

I can answer your question as to 'why' they do this......very simple....lack of character. If your word means nothing to you, then how can it mean anything to anyone else?

Let's put it on the other foot. What do you think when someone pays for it up front. Asked to hold on to it for a while then drop off the earth but hiding around here reading and posting off and on trying to throw people off. Same goes both ways who is the worse of the two. The thief who stole the money or the one who just broke his word?

I despise the "tire kickers", can't stand em, got no use for them. I peddle a ton of stuff on Craigslist, mostly car parts I get through work. I now put on every ad, that it is first come, first serve, I will not hold. People still ask me to hold stuff all the time. Another thing I now put in my ads is that I will answer 2 text messages. You want more info, my number is listed, call it. It pisses me off when people ask a billion questions via text when I could answer them all in a minute long phone call. If someone sends me a third text, I simply don't respond, and I usually never hear from them again.
Another rule I have recently adopted is that I won't meet you anywhere to make the sale, other than the gas station 1/4 mile from my house, which is where I sell most of my stuff cuz I aint having strangers come to my house. It is listed where the item is at, you want it, come and get it. I mean, I don't call wal mart and ask them to meet me halfway with my groceries do I?
I'm trying to sell my dog box and this guy blows up my phone calling and texting, and messaging me on Facebook sayin how much he wants it. He is about an hour away so I tell him I'll bring it to my work, which is a about halfway for him, and he can get it there. He said he'd call me in the morning and let me know when he's headed my way. So 3pm rolls around and still no call. So I text him and he responds "oh, something came up". Worthless $hit! Never heard from him again.
Selling crap is a major pain in the ass most of the time, but I do like the additional income so I keep dealing with the hassle.
