i am without a catch dog, bud my hunting buddy has a couple good uns. he went out of town yesterday, and i wanted to hunt. the place i went we have only caught a bunch of small hogs like 150 and under, and half the time never used a cd kuz most our dogs will try em when there small. i figured i'd be fine if i had to i'd shoot over. so me, my nebor, and his cuz head out. dogs got piggy a couple of times but never herd nothing. was about to call it a night when we seen BIG BOY just as he went in the woods. my dogs rolled out within 5 min they had em bayed. got to them, and saw how big this guy was up close.(BIG) by time i reached for my pistol he broke, bayed again, broke, bayed again. then i noticed my gunner dog was at my feet. looked at him and he is cut bad, and i could hear another dog yelp in the distance. so i called my dogs off, and went home to fix my cat up. didn't know that monster was out there. i was not prepaird, and learnd a lesson last night. BUT mark my words, IM GUNNA CATCH THAT HOG.

That happened to me a while back, in a way.

I have a few spots that re known to hold BIG boars. When I hunt them alone, I leave my one catch dog at home and shoot over two bay dogs. You have to have loose baying dogs. My two older ones woll bay a big hog 7-10 away when they stop him. Also have to be real quite when sneaking in on the bay. Did the bay break when you were walking in to it?

I try and hunt every hunt as if I'll get on "him".  No sense in bringing a knife to a gun fight Grin

Good luck

ive always heard the only way to shoot is during the day. just cause its hard to hold a light and cause you still have to get within 10 yards which can end up real bad in the dark without a cd holdin onto him.

i have brushgunned several hogs during the day and at night.  mostly its about practice.  your dogs also need to be use to being shot around.  my dogs on the shot go for a catch, so there is no time for a second shot.  another thing, if you dont have a clear shot at the head and you are using a large caliber firearm, go for the back or hip to break the hog down.  no sense in letting the race get longer.
there is nothing like brushgunning a hog at 10 feet and it is a real rush also.  and remember, keep you eyes on the dog.

Killed lots of boars at night without a catch dog. I have some gritty catahoulas that even if they back off and bay on a big one, if he busts they will catch one if i am close and hissing them. Shot a bunch at night, just have to be careful, real quite, and go in alone with light off or pointed at ground only. If you dont have gritty dogs that will catch one when he busts then use only a couple very loose baying dogs, the problem there is you cant always see the hog when you first come up on the dogs. They may be barking outside some brush and not even able to see the hog but know he is there. If you use loose baying dogs make sure you come in behind them in very thick brush, if not you could walk right up on the hog and not know it until its to late.

When I know I have to shoot a hog, alot more planning goes into how I approch the bay. Again making sure I am behind the dogs is best, but some other things I consider are; which way I think he may break if I miss or spook him. When ever possible I come in on the side I dont want him to break towards. For example, if I am on a property line and I think he may break to leave the property then I will come in from that side. Comeing from uphill is best in most cases, comeing in downwind on a real sored boar. There is alot more to think about when you know you have to shoot one.

Main thing to remember is lots of dogs poor in after a shot, even a loose bay dog will alot of times rush in after a shot is fired. So make it count, a wounded boar will kill a great start dog in short order, where the same dog may have gone for years without getting cut bad.

Guess what I am saying is it takes different planning and dogs if you know you are going without a catch dog.

The last hog good hog i caught i just had 1 baydog and my buddy had 1 gritty curdog. We got on 1 bout 200 and the dogs caught him for a little while but by the time we got there the dogs were about to stroke out and were just barely bayin him. They would lay down and bay him for a minute until hed try to break. Finally he got into an open spot and my buddy distracted him with the flashlight and i ran up and grabbed a leg. He about caught me a couple times before i got him, but you gotta dog what you gotta do.
