A friend told me that she had purchased a food grade plastic drum from a local honey company to use as a water trough for her horses but since her divorce, she wasn't going to need it. She said that we could have it for the dogs.
We went and picked the drum up and when we cut a hole in the end of it, we could see and smell a little diesel in the bottom. Probably about a cup. I guess someone used it for fuel and she didn't know.
So we washed it real good and left it sit in the sun to air out. Today I went to check it and it still had some smell to it. I washed out again with dish detergent and then soaked it down in bleach.
My question is.... if I can get rid of the smell will it be safe to use for a dog house or do we need to toss it? Also, do yall have any ways that yall like to clean drums besides the methods that I have used.
All of the previous drums that we have purchased were food grade and already clean with no smell.

Mrs. Dinah, I can't answer your question BUT I have access to plastic 55 gallon drums throught my grandfathers brick business. they come with detergent in them for rinsing brick after they have been layed and I have never done anything more than washed em out with bleach and water. I've never had a problem with using them for dog houses and I have been for a few years now. Let me know how many ya'll need, I can hook you up!

That's what i used for years before the pills and pour on came out. Spray them down with diesel, let sit for two minutes and wash off with water hose. Did it every seven days.

I'd throw some baking soda in the barrel for a few days if you are worried about the smell. Unfortunately plastic holds smell for a long time. I've had a few 5 gallon buckets that were used to store pickles now for 2 years and every time I open em up they smell just like some Kosher Dills. LOL!

I hear you catch more hogs with diesel dogs because the hogs can't smell them coming. We mix the fly stuff with diesel and put it on rubs for cattle. If they didn't like it I would think they would stay away. They haven't in my life time.

I was gonna say, it should be fine, but it appears as though you've had plenty of helpful replies already We get ours from the local feed store. They had some kinda pink liquid medicine in it for horses.

I wonder if the smell left behind holds any residual benzene.
