just was thinking what do you expect out of a brand new dog whos never seen a hog before to do when he sees one for the first time? do you think he is a cull if he doesn't automatically latch on? does it bother you if he just kind of jumps around nipping at it? just wondering on everyone's expectations and opinions!

I would be very pleased if he locked on the ear right off the bat...if he jumps around and nips I would have a big question mark about that dog???

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog...

If the dog is over a year he should lock down. That is a must, it's their main job, to stay locked on.

depends on the age. If over a year old...it shouldn't take long for them to figure it out. If a pup, no big deal. But, there's still a few variables that you have to consider, ie. size of hog, scenario, etc.
Bottom line, you have to understand what you're looking at.

i was just wondering what people think and expect. me and some buddies were talking about what they expect the other day..im not needing the advice on if i have culls because i've trained many cd..just wondering what everyone thinks because i think my expectations are too high sometimes lol

I expect a young dog say 6 months to try catching and mouthing piglets. A 8 month dog should be doing the same with 30 to 50lbers. Over a year should be catching and holding not regripping every 5 seconds. I was always told not to let ur bulldog catch anything much more than 50# until after a year in order to prevent damage to their teeth. I may have been told wrong and may go about it wrong but this is what I was told to do.
An unstarted dog over a year old I figure should get the general idea within the first 5 tries doing better each time.

I guess they're out there but I never had a bulldog that wouldn't catch.
My CD now I started late At 1 1/2. He was basically a house dog till my bay dogs were getting close to hunting age.
First day to pen
First run - danced with pig
Second run - caught ear, neck, snout soft...I touched him and he let go.
I wasn't really worried, like I said, I personally have never seen one that wouldn't catch.
Two weeks later
First run - caught ear hard right off the bat....had to break him off.
Second Run - freight trained the hog...caught ear hard and knocked him over.
That was the end of the pen work.
The hogs he's been on in woods...always ear...always hard...doesn't re-grip and that's what I expect.

Lol, I guess my expectations are a little more "loose" than some of ya'lls... and nothing wrong w that, I guess each person's different style works better for them!
We have been looking for a smaller cd for me for a while now, and for one reason or another, are now on the 3rd female cd. Seeing each of these dogs learn beside our proven cd, Loco, I have learned to use a lot of patience and encouragement with the dog to help them gain confidence. Maybe it's just me, but I have noticed the female cd's that we have had are a little more timid at first than our male cd was. To me, though, the most important thing is that the dog shows some kind of interest in the pig. After that, I like to kinda ease them into hunting... as for regripping, it seems to me as though the more experience, the less she will re-grip. I haven't really come across any that was sporadically jumping around and nipping- BUT if it looks like he/she is trying to find a good spot to get a solid grip and they just can't figure it out, then we will show them the ear. So far, that's worked for us. They might not hit the ear right off the bat in the beginning every time, but I have noticed that they get better "aim" and hold as time goes on.

Haha! Listen to this Ben...my same CD, first time in a "pen" was 5 months, in a puppy bay at a competition. Just wanted to take the family to a competition, show them what it was about. Anyway...Zeuse had never even seen a pig...like I said...basically a house dog. He sat by my side just looking around at the people...every once in a while at the pig. I made the pig move...it charged me...I dodged and so did Zeuse, lol. I think he hid behind me then, lol!!!
Still funny to this day. Things change, lol. Now I'm having to break him off pulling my arm out of socket to get to the bay.

Alot of backyard bulldogs don't want much to do with a hog and some even bay until the hog hits em pretty good or rolls em up, and then a switch flips and it's on.

Totally agree. The sow we had at the time is pretty much tame. It's half potbelly & half rooter. We took one out live last Monday & have her in the bay pen now but I haven't had a chance to get back over there. I haven't given up yet. Definitely gonna try again with the new sow we got, see if she'll rough him up & get him goin.

you still have the dog? id take him back.. i had a dog like that once (not a cd) and i worked on her confidence and then she was a new dog. |

right or wrong this is exactly how I have "trained" every cd I have ever owned......if you want to call it "training" 1) put 1 good bay dog in the pen .........I do this just to get the cd fired up and used to another dog being there 2) drop cd in from opposite side of the pen.........see if he has the natural want to or not 3) 1 of 3 things will happen: a. the cd will not aknowledge the hog and just kinda screw around b. the cd will run over to the other dog to see whats goin on and 1/2 ass bay with him......if u havent seen a pitt with a squeaky bark attempt to bay a hog then you are missing out, its hilarous! c. the cd will do what he is supposed to and catch the hog. Now if the dog does either a or b there is a pretty easy fix, at least it has always worked for me....... take him out of the pen, let the bay dog settle the hog in a corner of the pen then simply drop the cd on top of the hog......this has worked for me EVERY time, maybe I have just been lucky with cd's but it works...........the hog will hit the dog and probly ruff him up a bit (it is very important not to use a hog that will tear the dog up, I try to use a hog at or under 150lbs without teeth, you just want the hog to fire the dog up) I have yet to see a dog not immediately hit and catch the hog after he has been hit by the hog...........this has been the extent of my cd "training" moderators, I tried to keep this as clean as I could, if it is deemed inappropriate to be posted on the site I apologize ahead of time and please remove it, I know CD's and pen are a touchy subject. Just trying to help this fella out |
