My 18 year old dog named T is starting to show her age finally. I thought she was going to make it another couple years, but this cold weather is taking it's toll I think. I was wondering how to know when to put a dog down? Also if there is anything I can give this dog to help her not hurt so much? Her hips are hurting, and she struggles to walk when she first gets up. She can run around a little bit after she gets up and going, but it's not that easy for her to get up. She is laying around more and more, and I really don't want to have to put her down yet... didn't really want to do that at all. I'd rather just let her live out her days, but I also don't want her to suffer. Input appreciated.

Ryan there are some vitamens or however you spell it at tractor supply for older dogs suppose to give em like 2 a day its for bad hips and joints it helps alot but 18 years old is really old for a dog! id give her them and let her live out her days! it sucks to see em getting around slow but its really hard to go have one put down especially if you have had the dog for 18 years. try those pills and see how they work for you!

Take her to the vet and get her checked out. Explain the situation, the vet will give u some pain killers to help. They will have to be given daily but will help. Try not to give her more than she has to have so she isn't just a zombie.

Thanks guys... I appreciate it. Yeah, I've had her for 18 years and it's tough... Lets me know I'm not getting any younger either. I'm going to go check out the vitamins, and I'll give the vet a shout sometime today.

Ryan I hate to hear it, I also would try some of the vitamins that the feed stores carry for older dogs with hig/ bone and joint issues. Also A baby aspirin now and then would probly help her out. You will know when the time has come and you will know what needs to be done, enjoy the time you have with her now. once again sorry to hear it, 18yrs is a LONG time and a hell of a run for a dog.

Get your hands on some Rimadyl from the vet, and she's liable to get around like she is a 10 year old dog instead of an 18 year old dog. https://www.rimadyl.com/default.aspx

I would try EquiPride. It takes a tablespoon a day sprinkled over the feed. It will help her have better lubricity of joints, better circulation, stronger immunity, bright, clear eyes, and a shiny, healthy hair coat. Call me with any questions at 903-573-6201.
Thanks,

Best thing for her. My old lab was the same way. If you have a vet that you use regularly, they shouldn't have a problem selling you a bottle. You will see an amazing difference in her.

Ryan, rimadyl is some good stuff. I used to give it to Tweety the day before, the day of and the day after a hunt... after her ankle surgery.

Rimadyl is what the vet gave us for an old dog we had. She would hardly move all day. Put her on it and she thought she was 5 years younger atleast. She was jumping around like a pup. U gotta watch them tho cause they feel so good they can hurt themselves.

Thanks everyone... it sounds like that's the stuff I need to get. Once she gets up and going she is ok... It's that first couple steps and the effort it takes to get up that gives her hell. Is this something that you have to get from a vet, or can you order it online?
