went monday morning with a buddy of mine to the trinity river right outside of baytown to run the dogs on the US ARMY CORPS OF ENG land .  we've hunted there about ten times and man o man that is a honey hole !  its only accessible by boat and when you hit the bank and cut the dogs loose dont open a beer cause you wont be able to finish it before they have one bayed or caught !  anyway, long story short ......... i had no clue that you couldnt hunt hogs down there during duck season and after a long chat with the game warden and $125 later i now know the do's and donts of the trinity river corps property !  missed it by one week !   atleast he was nice enough to let us keep the five hogs we had already caught . lol

That comes out ot be $12.50 a hunt. I would pay that everyday to go catch 5 hogs a day.

no sh**. all the money we all put into hog dogs I would just see if that warden could just get me one of those ticketbooks and just send him a money order with a new ticket every time I went hunting down there. Hell, id even send it in a thank you card. so what exactly are the do's and don'ts down there. I have always been told you had to get some kind of permit from the cor of engineers and the waiting list was like fifteen years long. Did that come up in yalls conversation?

permit yes , waiting period maybe couple of weeks .  they only allow hunting before and after duck season and only on certain weekends .  you have to call or go down to the permit office and fill out paperwork to be elligable for permit . lady i talked to on the phone said its not that tough to get one .   man its so worth it !  i just started doggin and ill be the first to tell you that my dogs arent all that and we caught hogs every trip down there, its crazy !  couple of weeks ago when it was raining and nasty we headed down there with a buddy of mine that has some good dogs and we caught ten good size hogs in five hours !  that place is unbelievable ! great place to start some young dogs for sure !  i applied for a permit , ill keep you posted on the turn out .

Thinking the same thing that he has done told to much. It won't be a hog left the next time you go back there.

Anybody that lives in this area knows about that spot so no big secret to give away. But I was told recently by two different permit holders that they had a new guy in charge at the Ranger station and he cut dogging out period. Traps only is what I was told and I also heard that the Game wardens are keeping a close eye on the river for people hunting illegal.

Yup, and it's the whole river, not just the corps land that Seth is talking about. Sad thing is that whole country is ate up with hogs and nobody who matters cares. The dang govt owns pert near all of the good land over there due to flooding and they don't care to share it with dog hunters.

Either get legal, or get sneaky. Sneaky is easier, legal is cheaper.  Cheesy Wink

Good deal Seth, glad y'all been tearing it up over there! It's a awesome pup starter and a great refresher course for dogs of all ages! Y'all keep at it and stay safe man.

Government Land, well they didn't pay me much while I was deployed to Iraq, so guess I'll look at government land as the bonus I never got  Evil

My uncle owns some land in Jacks Pass that i can run on still, but that walking in that marsh is kinda hard on this ol fatboy.  Grin Grin Plus my big boat kinda took a dump on me the other day, so the money I had to buy me another river runner is kinda tied up until I can see how much it is gonna cost to get my big boat back going. But that river is a puppy starters dream come true, so I need to figure something out to get in there.

Jus look at it as paying your lease dues in monthly installments, sometimes you get lucky and can skip a few payments  Grin
