I wonder how many more posts I will read about someone buying a "finished" dog that they aren't happy with. People, just start raising dogs from a pup. I tried to do someone I barely knew a favor the other day and hook them up with an awesome catch dog extremely cheap and they got all up in my face saying that the only reason I would want to get rid of it is because it had to be a cull and I was trying to screw them over. Everyone wants the best dog, right now and cheap without having to do the work. If you don't have time to raise a dog and make it what you want then just go hunting with someone that does and quit starting crap. This sport isn't for the weekend warrior.

Come on man, not every1 has access to 1000s of acres just loaded with pigs, we all have to start somewhere. Iv been burned several times but its part of the [ job (since its only for the pros) ]. I guess some folks r just blessed with a 100% sucess rate from THEIR dogs n dont have to buy dogs or have them given to them. Some folks musta been born with a pup as a tag along in the woom

I disagree 100%... I started with pups and it's a long, hard road. If I had to do it all over again, I would buy a couple of good dogs and go from there.

The problem is, people don't go hunt with these dogs... just hand over their hard earned money from an ad they read on the internet.

My young dogs frustrate the hell out of me until i remember one is a year old and one is 6 months old. But i find myself enjoying watching them learn and challenge myself by hunting them as hard as i possibly can. But i am new to the sport so i can see where someone who had good dogs would want to move at a faster pace to replace said dogs. I think impulse buying hurts buying puppies and older dogs.

I wish I could afford good dogs or had some decent dogs. Instead I have one decent dog that would probly be a cull to most and 2 throw away dogs that were to bad to sell that I'm working with. Picked up a catahoula from a friend couple weeks back that is 7 mo old. Trying to get these dogs lined out and doing right is a chore without a good dog to help teach. I see lots of "finished" dogs here and other places but the prices are way high for my ability. It may take me a while but I think I can make these throw away dogs into fair dogs. Until then I will keep trying unless I win the lottery or something.

Risky business...buying puppies/dogs. I've been....LUCKY...I guess. I've got old contacts, guys I got into the sport...that were still in when I got back in. Was able to get a couple pups that I trusted would turn out...ones doing great...the other I moved...not because she wasn't gonna make a dog...just wasn't gonna fit my style. Pretty good deal on those two.

Took a chance on a yella pup...didn't know the guy and the pup was out of pretty much just cattle stock...big chance, but paid off huge. That don't happen much.

Took another chance on a couple pups out of East Texas...Red Curs (supposedly)...the jury is still out on those two but it doesn't look great.

Got real lucky and ill be getting a pup out of some old family blood out of Louisiana. Pretty positive that pup will make.

At a point now where I won't be buying anymore...I got what I need on my yard to start building. I rolled the dice a little and didn't come out to bad. But that don't happen much.

    Most pups dont turn out. Hell there are few grown dogs I would own. I dont like 75% of mine right now. I keep them because they are the best I can get right now. I raise a pup or two each year. Have yet to have one turn out better then what I have already. Hog dogs are a hard thing to find. For one everyone wants and expects something different out of a dog. What I like, you might not and so forth.

Then there's still a small chance they wont hunt like that for you.. But i'm getting too old to raise puppies, although its more rewarding to raise your own crew. My last litter i hope, will be my last litter!

You can buy dogs all day long. But to me it aint the same as raising one yourself and getting the satifaction of seeing it turn out for you. The dogs people go buy is someone elses work.

I agree with you. If I could go back to day 1 I would just pay what it took to have a finished dog or 3 and start from there. I think if that was a 4-5 grand price tag it would still be worth it. I completely understand with the satisfaction factor but on the other hand I'm satisfied catching hogs wether the dog was raised on my yard from a pup or not. The next thing is good dogs are always out there for sale it may take you a while to find one but there are plenty of good dogs that money can buy. I think it's your own fought if you get burned or ripped off bc let's face it a mans word and a hand shake ain't what it used to be.

I have raised my own dogs since pups and have been working them for like 4 yrs now. They are good to me so I am good to them. I have bought like 1 or 2 dogs from this site but have been burned by the ppl. They tell me they are finished dogs or started but when I take them out to hunt they stay at my feet and dont even go to bay. O well I just gave them away and just keep on working with mine EVERY WEEKEND that I can.

I happen to be one of the people with "retardedness".  I moved to Texas, went out hunting a couple of times, fell in love and decided i had to have dogs of my own.  I just happened to get lucky, a guy I had hunted with few times was having family troubles and had to sell his dogs.  I bought him out and had a good set of dogs that consitiently found and caught hogs no matter who they hunted for.  I became even more hooked now that i was catching hogs and my lead dog disappeaared in the middle of a hunt and i was back to square one with no real good dog to speak of.  I didn't know anything about training dogs, nor did I know anyone from Texas to learn from so I bought some pups and decided to try and figure it out.  The more I worked with the pups the more I wanted a good finished dog to run them with for them to learn from, so I decided to buy a few "finished dogs" of the internet.  Lost about $2000 on junk dogs from a couple places, I ended up keeping my pups and working them with the other dog I still had that would find pigs inconsiteiently.  I got lucky and had a good pup in the group, he found his own pig at 8 months old.  I started pening my pups and the other dog together at 6 months and started taking them to woods everythime I went at 6.5 months.  I am still looking for a great lead dog, I am still not where I would like to be with pups, but am still catching hogs.  If i had to do it again I would still try to start with a good dog and build my pack off him and around him, using him as a teaching tool and still giving me the joy of catching hogs.

you know every dog ive sold or tried to sell came with a trial keep him for a week two if he dont work out bring him back.whats so hard about that.seems fool proof to me.
