I would like to hear ya'lls opinions on the subject. How do you feel about someone raising wild hogs, Breeding sows and turning piglets out?

What are some pro's and con's?

where do you live ?  and with all the hogs running amuck now , what purpose would it acomplish . this is the exact sort of thing that caused the PROBLEM  we have now . pro's  none i can think of  con's bout several million of them . in my opimion anybody caught raising and releasing more hogs into the wild should be a jailable offense [ maybe a state jail felony  ] ! well that's my thoughts on the subject   lol  .

I'm In Georgia. Hogs around here are far and few. Its a pretty good drive to get to a couple good places to hunt.

Got some good land close to home, mostly river bottom, and little sandhill pines thought about lettin a couple litters loose and barr'n the Boars. No farm land around and not many houses either. I wouldnt do it purposely trying to overpopulate. We try to get hogs out deer hunting land and farmers feilds and turn em back loose on my land. My pens are full and sows are bred gotta do something.

Dont know how Texas is But if its anything like Fla i do understand what you mean when you say problem. I grew up in So Fla, We didnt know what a bay dog was for a long time, just hunted Vested up Pits. I moved up Here and found out its a whole nother thing. These hogs round here on deer dog clubs keep they nike's on. And you better have a cold nosed dog in these marsh's and swamps.

Again it wouldn't be to overpopulate, just to have somewhere close to hunt. Your Thoughts and opinions are greatly appreciated!

If i do, it won't be broadcasted Locally. Again, I'm not saying that I am going to do it, but i have givin thought to it. Thats why i sought advice before doing it. Just wanted to see if ya'll thought it to be a outlawish crime, or just shrugged at the mention of it.

Hogs that we catch, that are over 200lbs are butchered, sow, barr, or boar reguardless. Anything smaller is released on personal leases, that way we can hunt em again until they get of size. The more i type, the more i feel like im trying to justify doing it lol.

I understand what you're eluding to bowtech,.....I live in AL and hogs here are very scarce.....it's hard to find one actually. I think that many of the folks on here have grown up or live where hogs are a true nuisance because there are so many of them. They simply don't understand what it's like to go 4 or 5 trips and never find any sign of a hog. If you do this....keep it totally to yourself,.....do not tell any other person unless you can trust them completely....and I do mean completely! No girlfriends, hunting friends or cousins.......period! Good luck!

In some places in this great south it is not illegal nor frowned upon to have stocked hogs!

In my opinion the only way to turn hogs out is if u have a fence around every acre. The thing is they do tear up stuff and if u can't keep them on your property u are giving other people a headache and forcing them to pay for ur fun.

Firemedic- Your right, good dogs or not, we dont catch a hog every trip, or every other trip for that matter. Most the time we scout different properties during the week and try to keep em pinpointed. But here they are fairly scarce. Unless we're dumpin the box on a field lol

Cajun-Some good lookin hogs they yours? lol, its not illegal to have em here, just movin alive. don't know ya'lls regs.

Shotgun-The hogs we turn out are miles away from houses and farmland. Not sayin they don't migrate back but they are far enough they usaully dont. and like i said previously, 200lbs is the size limit, and once they reach that, they out. I really want to keep everyone happy and still enjoy the good hunting.

They are mine. I have been raising them quite time. The only trouble they cause around here is rooting up transplanted Yankee's and rooting up retired Yankee's golf courses. All of which if they get tired of it maybe they will move back to New Yowk or Jerzee! Smiley

And BTW. The theory of Wild hogs raising 12-16 piglets a litter 3 times a year is absolute Bull S#@t! I have had bunch of sows for many years and the biggest litter of pigs I ever had is 6. The majority is 3-5. And I have NEVER had all of them live. You are lucky if 2 live out of a litter. That is getting fed everyday and no predators taking piglets.

I use to have the same luck but try getting you a Poland china boar and mixing in your blood it will increase your litter size

I'm not just talking about farm land. I'm talking about turkey populations on adjoining properties or food plots neighbors plant for deer or just general browse such as acorns and low lying vegetation that deer and such feed on. The guy that buys a ton of corn or bran that he intends to feed deer with that has a bunch of hogs come in and destroy his feeder and eat all his corn has payed for ur fun. I know I am among the minority on this site and others when it comes to this subject but unless a person can keep them on property he owns or a group of like minded people own it should not be done. Lease property doesn't belong to the lessee and should not have non native species released on it. If for some reason that person paying that lease can not pay any more he has left the land owner with a population of hogs he may not want. I know this is a touchy subject with most because hog hunters don't see the problem but non hog hunters see the pigs as a problem. Another thing is studies show in order to maintain a feral pig population u must take 60% of the population. At first ur 200 pound rule may reach this but in a short time u will have to take a good number every year to manage this. In the end u will do what u want for the short term but the people that follow u will either see it as a plague or blessing.

Wow that sucks cajun, i was figuring on 6 piglets per sow, and them all living lol. I guess i can hang that up. pretty sure if i remember right, we use to give piglets iron shots, as well as clippin teeth and tail in vet class. not 100% tho. What you reckon causes em to die so early?

Shotgun- You have brought a very good argument to the table. And I do respect your stand and advice. I dont hunt turkey or deer at all(never enjoyed chasin billy goats and chickens) The food plot arguement is out, these hogs will be turned out in riverbottoms and sandhills. Its either flooded and wet, or too sandy. In Southern Ga we dont have the luxery of Food plots. Least not my parts. Now the feeder on the other hand yes, hogs will prolly enjoy their yella acorns. My argument is they enjoy shootin the hogs as much as i like catchin em. And they sure aint trophy huntin around here lol.

Now the leased land on the other hand is a good point. If i leave the lease, Rayonier(timber harvesting, lumber mills, wood procurement etc...) might and a big might be worried over a couple thousand acres with some hogs on it. More than likely if I leave, they will replace me with another hunter. But as a Christian I dont want to ruin my Testimony all because I turned out some hogs and became a nuisence to others. So you've givin me alot to think on.  Thanks!

if i did not have any hogs close to my house i would flood the place, i would not cut any boars for a while and then maybe next year start cutting some. several years ago it wasnt any hogs around my house but its now a pretty good place to hunt and right out the back door. but dont tell anyone some people dont like the idea as much as someone with dogs haha

Wish i had property to hunt right at the house. Still takes 30mins from house to get to land we've already been relocating hogs too.   Undecided

If only we could get those Cajuns to move back to Louisiana then we'd be set!
