I've seen plenty folks use them successfully, but I've seen a bulldog run right through one gettin zapped and all, lol, but I'm sure most breeds that have sense wouldn't do that.Thing I don't like about 'em is that they may keep your dog in, but they don't keep any other critters out.

i have one and i swear it teaches the dogs to stay close to you. every dog i have had a radio fence collar on is real short range. once i started keeping dogs in kennels they are hunting lots better. i tried calling one of my radio fenced trained dogs in off a race one night, she wouldnt listen so i gave her a little zap she locked up and she wouldnt move a step... goofy dog thought she was on her collar and i had to walk about a mile to lead her out..  if it is for a strike dog my suggestion is dont use one. yard dog and i would say go for it.

Kennel or chain your dogs. It keeps them out of trouble. I had one dog that would never stop barking. I put a bark collar on that dog and he kept barking. So I turned it all the way. I took it back to the store because it clearly did not work. They tested it and it worked just fine. The dog just did not care. My dad put one of those in and some dogs stay in and others just cross it. They learn to take a running start and don't slow down so the shock is shorter. So it may or may not work. Chains and kennels work.

I use one for the yard dog, but in reverse.  It works well.  I buried the line at the edge of the house, and it keeps the dog off the patio and flower beds.  The rest of the yard/pasture he can roam free.  If you do it like that, the  need for using the flags to mark the barrier is unnecessary.  The dog realizes that at a certain distance from the house the shock occurs.  If you use it to contain him, make sure you put the flags up the first week or so.  Eventually they learn the perimeter and you can remove the flags.  I too agree it is probably a bad idea yo try to contain hunting dogs with it.  When hogs come through my place at night my kennels barely contain mine.
