I've got a 1/2 red nose and 1/2 BMC, 3 yo, about 50lbs. He was a pet and just recently started him as a catch dog. All catch no bay. His first 4 or 5 hogs he caught on the ear, but the two hogs I put him on he caught on the leg. One on the back leg and one on the front leg. Any ideas on getting him to stop catching on the leg and start catching the ear again?

If the hog was running around the pen he was catching where he could. Get someone to hold a pig by the back legs. Lead him to the hog, show him the ear, let him take the ear and let them go. This will also let u see how he handles the hog and if he regrips. Do this about 3 times. Has worked for my young cds.

I have had the same problem, if the hog is running around usually they are gonna catch where ever they can. Ron has a great point that's what I have done and once they find that ear usually they'll stay on it! Good luck

did the dog catch in a pen or in the woods when he grabbed the leg? if in the pen then stop putting him in there. you already know he wants to catch so no need to teach him bad habits in there. if he runs to a bay in the woods then the hog will face off to him when he gets there.

Ok thanks for the help guys. The first time he caught on the leg was in the pen but it was because we needed to catch him. The second one was in the woods and we led him to the bay.

get a full blood pit or ab or dogo or crosses out of the three breeds into eachother, only way to go for a catch dog imo

My catch pups only do it a few times when they first learn. They learn that catching the leg hurts ( because I hoop their face with a switch!!). Only praise them for eat catching and discipline for legs. My brothers BMC will catch ear everytime as well. Some dogs have it and some don't.

I was just sayin to get one they work better for the most part, im not downing anyones dogs or anything but i've seen way too many straight catch currs cats or rcds of any kind run in to catch a 300+ pound hog and sit back and bay...
