Let me begin by saying that the dog I am looking for is not common, and I realize this. I know what I want, and have done my best to describe it below. If you know of a dog that fits this description. Please let me know. I expect to be able to hunt with the dog. If I cannot hunt the dog prior to purchase, then the purchase money will be put into escrow with a third party until the trial period is over. I would love to locate the dog in the Houston area, but I am willing to travel as far as I need to. If the right dog is in Kansas, or Montana, I don't care. As long as it is what I have described.

TITLE:
Guaranteed Finished Running Catch Dog

LEVEL:
FINISHED

BREED:
Any breed or cross considered, except pit. (I love hunting behind them, and appreciate them for what they are, I just don't want to own one.)
Ideally an AB cross

AGE:
2+

Sex and description:
Any sex, prefer something with some mass, legs, and lungs

RANGE:
Would prefer the dog to stay close to the horses until there is a bay. Dog should also lead well, and ride on a four wheeler. Most times this dog will be led, but when hunting horseback, I would prefer it to hang out, and not hunt on its own.

MOUTH:
Silent on track

TRASH:
Guaranteed not to trash. If it catches anything other than a pig, I don't want it. No skunks, coons, deer, CATTLE, possums, armadillos, you get the point

GRIT:
no baying, just straight catch. If the dog has ever stood back and bayed on a big hog, I don't want it.

DOG AGGRESSION:
Not dog aggressive, needs to be able to ride in the box with other dogs. Even after the hunt.

HUMAN AGGRESSION:
None tolerated

PEDIGREE:
Would be nice if it came out of working stock, but I don't really care about the pedigree, as long as this dog takes its job serious

BACKGROUND of the dog -
No dog traders. I don't want somebodies culls. If you have not hunted this dog and been on 40-50 hogs, I don't care to hear about it.

TERMS OF SALE
I want a 2 week money back trial. If the dog does anything other than described prior to sale. Dog will be returned in as good or better than condition it was received in.

PRICE
While there is a limit to what I am willing to spend, I am going to keep my options open. Like I stated before, I do not want a cull. I am looking for an honest dog, and an honest deal. Don't come with a 100 dollar dog expecting 500.00. I will pay what it takes to have the right dog.

I want to add to this "WANT AD" that I am willing to pay a finders fee.

Here is how it works.
You locate the dog for me, and if it makes the two week trial, and the deal is sealed. I will pay for a Quick Track tracking collar in the frequency of your choice, and have it shipped to you. Collar will be bought through Easttexashogdoggers.com, and shipped direct.

Guys, I am serious about finding this dog, and maybe my finders fee is enough to entice someone to help me locate one.

Thanks

Your looken for a catch dog that will not hunt with your curs and will stay close to your horse, then go when a cur barks and catch and not let go.
sounds like you want a catch dog that goes to a bay on camand only.
straighten me out , is this what you want ?

Lavon,

You pretty much have it right. However, It needs to have the wind to walk/jog alongside the horse without tiring.

And completely trash broke.

Lavon,

You are correct in that they are hard to find, however I have hunted behind a dog just like I am describing. As a matter of fact, I brokered the deal when he was sold. At the time, I did not need him, now I am in a different boat.

Can you explain to me why the dog would not last one hunt on Mat Island? I am confused about that comment.

You see, here is where I think a common misconception falls.  People who are used to hunting on foot, truck, or wheeler think about how long it takes to get to a bay. People who hunt horseback can arrive so much faster it is not even funny.  I imagine Scott/Realdogs knows how much faster he can arrive at the bay, vs hunting foot and wheeler as he hunts both styles.   Being able to get to the bay that much faster, keeps the RCD from catching hell from the hog for too long.

I have never asked him what catch dogs he uses when they hunt horseback. Do you know if it is his white dogs?

catchdog,

I am trying to stay away from the pit, but It may come to that if I cannot find the right dog.

There are two dogs that I know of that are either full pit or high percentage pit that fit my description.

I would love for an AB cross to show up, as I prefer the AB. If that does not happen, I will contact you.

Thanks for the reply.

CHRIS,,, If your cur dogs bay a hog 1/2, 3/4 or even 1 mile awayor across the river and your loose catch dogs here them bay then the catch dogs is gonna roll out to the bay. If its thick or across a river or if the hog breaks and goes even farther,, or for many reasons it takes you a while to get to the bay that boar hog will kill your catch dog,5 min. is forever for a catchdog to be on a hog. seen lots of dogs butchered in just 1 minute.

when you find a horse that can out run a 650 kalasaki,, we going to delta downs,,lol 650 will run bout 50 not drinken 60 if drinken,,,lol

i will assure snowball ,,willy shaffer,q-ball, & whitey would not have ever made it if i let them run loose and go when they wanted to.and they have never wore a vest. cut collars only.
MATT ISLAND is a place with lots of thick sage bruch, cane breaks and wolf weed thickets, thats loaded with big tooth boar hogs.

Lavon,

You have a point, but you are missing mine.    If I am hunting where a 650 Kaw can drive, the catch dog will be on the back of the wheeler.  I have been in situations hunting wheeler, with other people on horseback. The hog is caught and tied before us on the wheelers showed up.  Mine can only run about 50 mph though... Maybe the Kaw running 60 could have gotten me there faster than the horses.

If you are in the thick nasties you would be walking and leading the RCD, he then becomes a typical catch dog.  If you are hunting the wide open where a four wheeler is capable, then he would be clipped.  If you are horseback, he is with you. Some people go so far as to lead their dog beside the horse, I don't want to bother with that.

One other thing. My dogs hunt fairly close. If I don't see them in front of me, I am waiting to hear them. If I cannot hear them for a few minutes, I am tracking to them.  I am not able to own long range dogs like some. The properties I hunt do not allow for them.

I do understand hog hunting of all styles.
I do understand if you let your catch dog run loose
HE WILL GET KILLED, probably sooner than later.

Lavon.

You may be right. I figure that is a chance we all take hunting dogs.

I have been fortunate so far that I have not lost a dog, probably just have not met the right hog yet.

One RCD that I hunt behind occasionally was just retired at 12 years old, been doing it his whole life. Granted he is probably the exception and not the rule, but it can happen. He has been put back together several times. Smiley

Circle C,

Me and 3 other guys hunt on horseback in real thick country. Between the 4 of us we hunt 6 dogs (all pure curs). Of the six dogs we hunt it doesnt speak for the hundreds upon hundreds we have culled. Alot of th edogs we have culled would be great dogs for some people and some other hunting styles. 5 of the 6 catch on command (the only one that doesnt has a real damn good nose). I can tell you that we wouldnt sell a dog we hunt for anything less then $7500 (maybe even if that). I truly believe that finding a dog you like to hunt behind is worth no amount of money. I hope you find what you are looking for but Im afraid it pretty much implausible. maybe you can try breeding a lab and a pit? Either that or invest a really good shock collar and spend lots of time with about 20 dogs to get one you might like. If someone has a dog like you want you better be willing to get your pocketbook ready. Good luck to you though. I agree that a dog like you describe wouldnt live very long and would also get your other dogs hulled out pretty fast. Just my opionion though.

Not to change the subject at all but I would really like to hear on the main forum about people that hunt horse back and pictures of the dogs used etc.  This style of hunting really intrigues me but having a horse and dogs that all work as a team sounds REALLY challenging and how to run a catchdog has me concerned as well.  I will start a new thread for it on the main board.
I have only been around one dog that would walk next to you without a lead while dogs were baying and not go until you told her to no matter how close to the bay you were.  It was really impressive.  I too am in the market for a catchdog so if you know of anything that maybe doesn't quite fit Chris' bill let me know  Grin

Here is what it boils down to. I know what I want. Is it the dog for everyone, nope. Is it going to live forever, not likely. Can it be killed the day after I drop serious coin on it. Sure.

I don't want this to sound rude, but here it is. I don't want to hear what I can't do. I have said what I want, and that I am willing to pay. Nowhere in my post did I imply that I am looking for a cheap dog. I said I don't want to pay 500 for a 100 dog. Likewise I don't want to drop 5k on a 1k dog.  If the dog is worth the money, and the dog can back it up. I am game.I am not afraid to spend the money to do it right. I am no stranger to expensive livestock, and a well trained dog is no different than a well trained horse, and I have a pasture full of US and Canadian National Champions. I know what it costs to finish something out.

If you have a dog that you say is worth 3k, and it fits my bill. Give me a call, let me see it, and let's see if we can make a deal.
