Here's the other side of the story. I am out checking cows that are calving this spring, had a couple that had were overdue so I put them in a large trap so I could check on them. I am out about 2:30 am driving to the trap. out of Know were comes six or seven dogs and three ATV's chasing a hog across the pasture. I catch about about six to eight groups a year running dogs on me in the middle of the night. And that's the ones I catch. They are usually young hunters with catch that hog at all cost mentality. They have permission to hunt the 30 acres, three places down from me. Most of the time I honestly think they don"t know were there at.  I have had cows with there ears eaten off, calves stomped to death by the mother fighting of dogs and goats killed. I had one dog with a tracking collar catching my nanny goat and tearing them up. Took a video and put the dog down. The kid shows up looking for his dog and calls the sheriff outraged that I killed his dog. The kid tries to tell the sheriff that the dog is trash broke. Plus I like to trap the hogs on the place. There are times when people I know ask to run there dogs on the place and about twice a year I let them. I will shoot stray dogs, if they are skinny mangy looking out around the cows. I try to look for collars and a decent looking dog will get a pass once or twice. If it comes between strange dogs and my cows and calves, and I don't like the way they look, sorry I am protecting my own. Plus now they have a subdivision at the end of the property. About twenty houses I think they all have big dogs running loose. They think they live on five acres so why does there dog need to be controlled. The last few years I Have gotten alot less tolerant of stray dogs. There are several people that will call and tell me that they are hunting on X property with there dogs. So if I see them they belong to them. Not a problem in the world with that or knock and ask to look for a dog, sure thing. It pisses me off to be run off my own road by a pickup truck doing fifty or sixty miles an hour on my property by guys looking for there hog dogs.

You said it, they have to catch the hog at all costs.

Well hell with all these super dogs that are being bred those instances may be on the rise due to endless bottom and superior hunting drive  Grin.

All joking aside I hate to hear that, I hate to hear of people that help perpetuate a negative image of hog hunting with dogs.  I appreciate you patience with those that deserve it, I would have a hard time putting up with some of the things that you tolerat.

Yup, if they don't do that then that hog will run farther next time. Wink

I AGREE ITS A BAD DEAL EVERY WAY U LOOK AT IT.AND IT MAKES IT HARD 4 THE ONES THAT DO IT RUGHT  2 PICK NEW PLACES UP 2 HUNT WHENEVER THE OWNERS HAVE ALREADY HEARD ABOUT THE HORROR STORIES LIKE URS CHEWED UP COWS AND INJURED OR DEAD CALVES NO MAN WANTS 2 TAKE THE RISK OF THIS HAPPENING 2 HIS CATTLE THEREFORE THEY WONT LET U HUNT THERE PLACE. ALL BECAUSE OF SOME IDIOTS THAT HAVE NO RESPECT FOR OTHER PEOPLES PROPERTY AND LIVESTOCK. AND I HATE WHEN SOMEONE CUTS A FENCE AND THEN DONT PUT IT BACK. IT ONLY TAKES ONE BAD GROUP LIKE UR TALKING ABOUT 2 MAKE US ALL LOOK BAD. AND IM SORRY ABOUT UR COWS

I know (or at least assume) that you guys are kidding . . but just to be safe . .

The group I hunt with is very respectful of landowners. And we never turn loose on less than about a thousand acres as a bare minimum, usually then with an agreement from some of the neighbors. Most of our spots are in the 6,000 acre range. And even then, if dogs go overboard, we try to contact the neighbors. Failing that . . I go in solo, on foot and catch out the dogs and make sure they don't roll out again. And if ours kill stock we won't kick about retribution from the owner. Mine have no interest in cows, etc.

Now, if you own a petting zoo and mine get after your pet bear . . . . man I sure do apologize.

I had a thread bout wannabes awhile back and this is what i was trying to get at. This is the type of hunters that ruin it for the good ones that have RESPECT for other people and there property. As doggers we appreciate the fact that you do understand some circumstances and allow people who have respeect to call u or knock u allow them to try and look for there dog and not have the instinct of some landowners to just shoot them no matter what.

Those idiots know exactly were they are at!
Any one that runs dogs (spare rabbit and squirrel hunters) knows that 30 acres is not enough to run dogs on. Its just a place for them boys to park their rigs so they can hunt adjacent properties.
Its one of the oldest tricks in the book for outlaw hunters.
Its definitely guys like that that screw it up for those that do it right!

smwilson,
I wish there were more land owners were like you but you are a better man than me buddy. I would be a lot tolerant of slob hunters like that to say the least.

Hey, I wasn't bashing anybody. Just the fact that there are some less desirable people hunting hogs. The point that I was trying to make is if I know that you are running dog on one of the places around me, I am not surprised to see a pack of dogs, and don't think right away that they are strays. I have several people that will call and tell me when they are going to be out hunting.  It is not a problem if dogs run hogs on to my place, If there is someone behind them to pick the dogs up. Take a look at this. How am going trap hogs with the dogs running the place. I don't Know if there hunting dogs or not, If I had to guess, I would say they are dogs from the subdivision. But why should it screw up my trapping because people don't control there dogs.

When you catch the outlaws, what happens? Do you prosecute? I'm on the same page as the person who said that the 30 acres is just a place to park for those guys. I think everyone has gone onto unpermissioned property no matter how many acres you hunt. The difference is that you don't try to hunt a property you've entered to retrieve your dog. Sounds like your outlaw boys either don't know they are in the wrong or that they just don't care.
Sad.

Cheers

I got the same problem with trespassers right now and everything gets blamed on me at first.  I am in the process of making it were the boy(s) who are hunting my area will and are going to get gone or suffer the consequences.  Plain and simple.

That is why you don't share places. When you are the only one hunting you tell the land owners and neighbors to take any one to jail who ain't you... no exceptions.

I HAVE HEARD OF RANCHERS AROUND HERE PUTTING DOG KILLERS ON THEIR PLACES TO KEEP TRESSPASSERS OFF. I TALKED TO ONE GUY THAT WILL LET NE ONE RUN DOGS ON HIS PLACE AS LONG AS YOU ASK. HE HAD A REAL BIG PROBLEM OF PEOPLE JUST RUNNING ON HIS PLACE LIKE CRAZY DURING THE WEEK WHILE HE WAS WORKING. HE TOLD ME THAT  HE PUT 3 BARR BOARS ON HIS PLACE THAT WENT WELL OVER 200 WITH REAL NICE CUTTERS THAT HE CUT THE EARS AND TAILS OFF! HE SAID ABOUT A MONTH LATER HE FOUND 2 DEAD DOGS ON HIS PLACE. HE SAID HE HATED TO DO IT BUT HE PUTS DIRESPECTING HIS PROPERTY LINES AND THE NO TRESSPASSING SIGNS WAS JUST LIKE  BREAKING INTO HIS HOME EVERYTIME HE LEFT.

Joey,

A man with the home owner's association for a neighborhood in Pearland, Tx recently contacted me about doing hog removal in their area, but I passed it up because of the large numbers of people that outlaw the property. I told him that if I was the only guy on file running dogs out there, then every time an outlaw's dog screwed up, they would be blaming me first. Just not worth the headache to me.  Hope you get your trespassers lined out.

This problem affects me in the area of finding new places to hunt, seems like all the landowners around here have had so many problems with irresponsible hog hunters that they would rather have hogs than hog doggers!! I try to asure them that im not what they have experienced in the past and even offer a written contract, but nothing seems to change their mind. Its like were a bad breed of people to anyone who has had a negative experience due to the irresponsible hog doggers. GRRRR Angry

yep, that is how it works because perseption rules...I spent some time in the Marine Corps, and everytime anybody anywhere ever did anything wrong, if he was in the corps, no matter if it was 30 years ago it would make the front page.  Once you are in a group like that people don't see the individual anymore.  Hog Hunters are a group like that, because most think we are wild and crazy in the first place..So, back to the perception thing again..
