I'm new to the hogdogging and looking for advise.  I'm thinking about making my own leads so I can pick the components (and have that good feeling of making your own stuff).  I'm wondering what size coated cable to get.  What is the standard size the companies that make leads are using?  1/8?  3/16?  1/4?

I make mine out of rope like horse leads. Much easier on the hands pulling catchdogs out. I only use cable leads if I have to put the dog somewhere like a tree so they don't bite through the rope. Just my two cents.

I use 5/16 braided cable with plastic outer shielding. I used a rope lead once and as said before, dog chewed through it. 6' cable, 2" ring, a couple S-hooks and snaps. Loop cable through ring, slide it through the ferel clamp n squeeze it, make another loop on orher for a hand hold and if run another snap through it n squeese another ferel clamp. Take the s hooks and other snaps and put them on the 2" ring. I guess iv used the cables for so long, i dont hav an issue with them hunrting my hands, i had 3/16 cable n they dug bad, but not these i built.

Now I only have one hand for pulling. So pulling two or three Dogos out with one hand I like the thick rope. But you can't tie the dog of to a tree because even my bay dogs can go through rope like nothing. I lost my last cable lead so I need to make some more. Where is the best place to get the cable? Now I will have to go dig up my crimper.

I like stainless chain with a couple of quick links, 2 snaps and a nylon strap which I rivet on...makes a good leash...

Tractor supply is where i got cable, but im thinkn bout goin through grainger or msc direct and getting stainless cable and a rubber hose that will fit over it for a hand hold and an anti chaffing barrier where the ring will ride. The plastic coating on mine are cracking and breaking and they are starting to rust.

Yeah I had to toss them when they started rusting. I will have to look around and see if I find some cable I like.

my son likes the cable leads but they hurt my hands. I ordered a couple of these a few years ago an really like em. Easy on your hands
and that tufflex stuff is nearly indestructible . I know the post is about homemade leads but these are some well made leads that are easy on the hands

I pay about 10$ for the stainless and nylon leads from tejas outdoors. It would cost me more to buy the snaps, rings, S clamps, Chain, nylon, and to sew it some how. They buy in big bulk so they make money from it. But they make about 30 a day lol.

I do like making some out of big rope. Loop the end and snap on the other end. Mabe a 2" ring on the loop end to shoulder snap it for carrying through the woods

Your exactly right. I get the cable, S hooks and ferrels for nothing. And by the time I buy the chain and snaps and rings....I could have bought 3 leads.

http://www.handmadebymahon.com/dogleashes.php

$6 or 4 for $22

This is where I buy them. He uses good cable and snaps.

For that price when they walk off, get left in the woods, fall off the dogbox, fall off the boat in the river....I can chalk it up to me being a dummy!

If I buy 2 good snaps from ace hardware or tractor supply I got $7 in it.
