3-9-13 Burned Hog

My hunting partner and I have had a good year catching hogs.  It seems like we have been able to catch a good hog every time we go.  A guy I work with has been keeping up with my hog hunting stories and been asking for weeks to go.  About Wednesday of this week we locked in plans for hunting a lease I have never been on before.  Before we even get to the lease, I see more rooting that I’ve seen in a long time.  Everywhere I looked I could see rooting.  After unloading the wheelers and collaring dogs, we drive a couple hundred yards and instantly hit rooting.  The rooting was in a creek bottom and it literally went for as far as I could see.  Some from last night, other rooting from days before.  No telling how many hogs were doing this much damage.  My first concern was I will never get this pack of hogs stopped and if I do, I end up with a little piglet.  It didn’t take long and we had an empty dog box and dogs spread all over.  There was so much hog sign, that dogs hit scent everywhere and they all split.  After an hour and a half or so, my buddy’s Nola Plott dog finally showed treed and her bark went to the every breath bay bark.  Within seconds, my plot Bee and my Catahoula were right with her.  As we eased in I sent the bulldog and he caught all ear.  My work partner finally made it after the hog was caught and half hobbled.  He enjoyed the honor of sticking the hog and his adrenaline was pumping.  The odd thing about this hog was that every hair on him was completely burned.  We caught him about 750 yds from the National Forest and the section close to the lease was burned this week.  Best I can figure, he got caught trying to run through the fire.

Caught quite a few hogs in fresh burns, and even caught a few with the fires still burning, but never caught one with it's hair singed like that.

I've been trying to imagine what happened and I figure this...

We were hunting on a lease that borders the National Forest, which they burn a lot.  The NF section we were hunting next to was burned last week, I think he somehow was caught in the fire.  The lease we were on is all creek bottom and has a bunch of sloughs.

I bet as soon as he caught fire, he made the dash to the creek bottom and jumped in the first bit of water he could find.  Just imagine seeing a hog on fire running through the woods and crashing into a creek.  WOW!!

He really didnt have the stinky boar smell or he did not smell burn at all.  Wierd...for sure.
