Ok soooo........is it just me, or am I one of only a few that break their CD's off of the hogs with a break stick???
What sparked me to ask this question was that I was reading someone's website today, that hog hunts, and they were telling how they had a CD a while back that they had to "beat" off of a hog. I have even seen someone on a youtube vid punch the bejeezus out of a bulldog's head trying to get him off a hog rather than simply using a break stick, causing less stress on both dog and the hog that's getting it's hide ripped off in the process of yanking/whacking the dog. Maybe it's because I am a bulldog person? When a bulldog goes into hold on something chances are you WILL need a break stick to get them off. Even some terriers require break sticks. I know that some folks have CD's that they apparently can call off a hog which is pretty impressive, but what's up with wailing on a dog instead of breaking him off quickly and efficiently with a break stick? Aside from that, why would you wanna wail on a dog that is actively doing what he technically is supposed to be doing? Catching/holding the hog? It doesn't take much effort at all to grab the CD's collar in one hand and break him off with a stick in the other. Takes a total of less than 20 seconds usually, lol. I can even do it with my bad back. I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on this.

I completely agree its much easier to break off than beat off!! I have a redbone put that bites harder than any dog I have ever saw catch he will bite the ear smooth off at the head. I can pat I mean gently and say caught hog and he lets go..

I USE a break stick , no need to beat him , like you said he's doing what I want him to do , I get him off and move back away from all the action and then give him a that a boy

If you have time to hunt you have time to teach commands. People say their dog is to hard headed to do it. I think they are just to lazy to try. I have 3 CD and they will all let go on command.

I use a break stick also but with my ridgeback x Pitt the easiest way is stick the pig. Once the pig stops kicking he will let go and look at me and smile.

Great feedback from y'all thus far, I love reading everyone's thoughts!
As far as releasing hold on command......maybe it's due to the line of bulldogs I use/feed but that would be an 'almost' impossible endeavor. I am perfectly okay though with just breaking them off. Nothing to do with laziness whatsoever. I would like to see if I can teach these Stag pups I have down the road a command to let go though when I want 'em to. That'd be somethin else!

Please tell me hangalong s aren't what I am thinking.........
I grab their collar and pull straight up . Isn't easye but after a min or two they are off. I don't like the idea of a break stick , seems like you could break a tooth .

Doesn't take that much pressure on a break stick when done right. It is a break stick not a pry bar. I have seen guys bite their dog on the ear. Also seen them pour water on their head. I try to remain calm and tell mine loose caught hog when breaking him with the hope that one day he will figure it out and no longer have to use a break stick.

When used properly how they were intended, you do not damage the dog's teeth when using a break stick. Trust me, the folks many many moons ago who created the break stick did not want their dog's teeth damaged I'm sure. I've used one plenty of times and never damaged a dog's teeth. You'd really have to be shanking the thing to cause damage.....

I don't use breadsticks. I pull up on my bulldogs collar and eventually they will let go. After a few times of that, once you pull up on the collar for a few seconds they learn to let go.
