Ok I have a question...those of you that raise the hog dogs...how did you get your name and your dogs blood line out there? We are wanting to raise a few and start our own bloodlines with our own dogs and not really breed to outside dogs. I think that would make the pups worth more if there are only a select few. Our dogs are getting a pretty good name for themselves around here and we have 2 pups out of one of our males, they are 7 months old and are already finding their own hogs. We are really proud of them and they are good looking dogs and we get a lot of compliments on them and people are constantly wanting us to price them!
So I guess Im saying we want to be known for selling and training good dogs, so how do we get started??!!! Do I need to get videos of our dogs hunting or what?
I know this may not seem like much to some but we have caught about 40 hogs since the beginning of the year, and we don't hunt everyday.
Thanks in advance!!

So you do it for the money ?

I don't know many true dog men that are rich.

Post your hunts with pictures and details over and over and over!  Advertising works for salesmen, but most rednecks don't deal with salesmen!  Good luck hunting!  Breeding should be for yourself, if anything give away the first 100 litters and let others speak for you.  Not being rude, just saying there is plenty of Moly/Ben Jordan's out there.

No we enjoy doing it, not for the money. But we are not going to GIVE our dogs away...this is a fun hobby for us...but a good dog is worth something. We arent looking to get rich. I hear of peoople getting thousands of dollars for their dogs. We just want a good name for ourselves for selling GOOD dogs, and want people to be happy with them. It would be nice to have a waiting list so to speak and know all the puppies are spoken for when they are born. IDK its just something we have been thinking about. I was just curious as to how people do it!!

This

I don't know many true dog men that are rich.

And this

Breeding should be for yourself

It's best to let the dogs speak for themselves. It seems that you are concerned with the money that supposedly comes from good dogs...good luck with that.

As far as people knowing they'll be getting good dogs...if you are selling pups, there's no guarantee. There are culls in every litter. When I go to purchase or accept a dog as a gift...it's more about the man/woman who put the breeding together than anything else.

If the dogs you're raising are that good, you won't need any advertising....they'll take care of that for you.

Pictures don't mean anything.  The best of the best dog men I've met over the years, seldom if ever seem to post hunting stories and pics unless a special or memorable hunt for one reason or another.

Here's my two cents! Start posting pictures of your hunts with pictures of your dogs with them.  Tell how your dogs did during the hunt good or bad. How you hunt i.e. walk, road, etc..Once other members see that you are catching hogs then you will see interest in your dogs. Proof is in the pudding! This is just my personal opinion but I will look at members posts and if all there posts are in the dog trader then that's a red flag for me. Good luck with it! Grin

completely agree 100%, sorry and not trying to be an prick but I have been guilty of it before.............while you may say you aren't in it for the money it sure seems otherwise to me and a couple other guys that called me askin if I had read this post yet.... if the dogs are that good then you won't have a problem selling pups and as far as the whole "not wanting to give them away" goes, IF they are as good as you say they are then they will be sold for whatever it is you are asking before the litter ever hits the ground....Hell I have given away pups to a few guys off this site that I know for a fact I could have got 600$ at 6weeks old from because of the line they come from. If you truely ain't in it for the money then charge and honest price to help offset the cost of feed/vet bills and roll with it...my honest opinion........hope it ain't too rude and you see where I am coming from being an outsider lookin in not knowing you.

Thanks for the input. We arent trying to get rich even if it did sound that way. Im not talking about pricing pups for $500 or more. Just want to offset costs some. Didnt mean to open a can of worms, i was just curious how some of those people got their bloodlines out there that everyone is talking about.

If you have good dogs that hunt the way you like and you are proud of them, breed for yourself and don't let your bloodline slip away.

When you have good dogs, it doesn't mean that they will pass it on to their offspring. After breeding them and raising the pups and you find that they do pass their good traits to the pups, there is no guarantee that the offspring will pass along these traits. And if they do, usually only a very select few pups out of each litter will turn out good. So then, if you sell a few of these pups that turn out good to someone. Your name goes with that dog. So then the new owner is so proud of this good dog that he bought from you, he breeds it to his buddies dog out of who knows what. The pups all turn out like crap. But he sells them to the general public with your name attached to them. So some one is hunting one day and they say, hey where did that sorry, no hunting dog come from?....... and BAM, your name gets thrown out there.

Take my advice, breed for yourself and keep COMPLETE control of your blood. Give pups to family and close friends with the agreement that if the pup doesn't work out, you get it back or it gets culled. Period.

Now that's just my opinion. Good luck with your own line of dogs.

When i said worth more i was meaning that more people wld want them and we wouldnt have any left over out of a litter. Not necissarily that they would be priced high!!! Sorry for the mix up, i didnt really know how to word it!!

Thanks for the advice djhogdogger!! You make a good point!! I didnt think about some of that!! That is probably what we will do...just keep them to ourselves!! THANKS!!

The dogs actions will speak plenty loud enough to get ur name out there.
A man that's been breeding for over 20 years told me to take money out of the breeding equation because, it will only corrupt ur breeding program.

The way I see it is keep hunting ur dogs and breeding the best u can. As others get a pup and it turns out to be agood dog folks will want to know where they got it. When more of the folks getting ur pups are happy to exstatic about the performance of ur pups they will make others want them. Breading ur own lines from what I see takes years and years. The time it takes to have ur lines well known and desired and commanding high prices will take even longer.

Selling the pups out of your dogs isn't really keeping the bloodline to yourself!!!  Grin
