We have never been to a bayin contest, can someone please explain some of the rules to me? Like the age of the dogs for different catagories. Do you stay in the pen with your dogs during the bay? Will you get kicked out if your dog goes crazy and grabs the hog? Mine are a little gritty but also shy around strangers so heck, they might cower and try to hide. Embarrassed Are some dogs not cut out for these kind of contests? How do you know?

I would think that until you tried it you wouldnt know.  If you did try it and dogs didnt do good I doubt you would be the first.

thats true. I want to enter one but nervous about what my dogs will do. My husband told me not to worry with it because our dogs are woods dogs, but i am competitive. Just trying to do some research.

I just went through what you're thinking about doing yourself. Here's the thread:

http://www.easttexashogdoggers.com/forum/index.php?topic=6479.0

I really enjoyed the atmoshpere and the friendly doggers I met there, so I'm probably going to try my dogs in a bay contest again, but probably entered together and probably not for some time to come.

djhogdogger We put on a great baying every month in Bremond, Tx, the only age age event is the puppy class, 0-12 months, old and young, one dog , and two dog there is now age limit, you can't stay in the pen while the dog is baying, there are guys there in the pen for pen help, you bay for 2 min, unless you bay off then you may bay for 3-4 min. if the dog catches the hog for longer than 5 seconds then the dog is disqualified,, come on down and give it a try I promise you will have a blast! Some dogs are'nt cut out for it but there are more than you think, personally, I have all woods dogs, some bay in the pen really good and some bay loose and loop out and look out, not so much a pen dog, i forgot to mention, for example, in all the events, your dog will go in with a perfect score, as the dog bays and the hog charges and the dog turns his tail and runs thats 1/10 of a point if the dog breaks concentration and looks away thats 1/10 of a point, so in other words if he messes up it's a 10th of a point, with the exception of a catch out

Here's our events*
puppy bay
old and young
shoat bay
one dog am
two dog am
one dog pro
two dog pro                Hopr this helps your question.....W.D.............

I wouldn't worry about how your dog does in the pen.  I put my dog in the pen, and all she wanted was out of there.  I didn't even let her go the whole two minutes, but when I got her out, it wasn't like there was a lot of people pointing and hooting and laughing, it was just on to the next dog, so even if your dog isn't a pen dog, there's nobody there that's gonna make you feel low about it. Real friendly people all around, and a lot of dog talk going on.

I wouldn't worry about if your dog does good or not. Me and My G/F compete all over the state and also in La. We have both woods and pen dogs. Our woods dogs do okay in the pen but are a little rough, except for one, he does good in both! We are gonna bring a couple more of our woods dogs this time, and i know that we will have one that will bay at least 20ft back. He is smart though, he has had his butt whooped a couple of times in the bay pen cause its a whole different ball game in the pen than in the woods! We took a young 7month old Gyp to the last baying. At home she bay's awsome. When we got there, i don't know if it was all the people or what, but she didn't do a thing, just sat by the gate and looked at the crowd! Bremond is a great place, atmosphere, and awsome people to chat with and meet. It will be worth the trip! No matter if your dogs do good or not, you will enjoy it! Just my .02 worth. Hope to see you there!

Thanks ya'll. I'm djhogdoggers husband. I know they will bay in a pen, because thats how I started them all and I still put them in there every now and then. The only thing is that all my dogs are pretty gritty and will catch if there are 2 of them in the pen together. From what Wormy Dog said it will hurt me or disqualify my dogs. Some times if the hog is big enough they will sit back and bay, but they will try him at least once. We are think about coming up to the baying on the 25th if everything works out and bring some of our dogs just to see how they do. I guess I want know how they will do until I try it. Thanks guys

ME and my husband went to our first bay trial in May with our female blk mouth. She didnt do to good, but thats just the way it goes sometimes. Some dogs are just better in the woods. You should just try and see how they do. If they catch thy will be disqualified.
