I was wondering how some of u go about starting new dogs to striking without a finished dog to lead the way? Any advice would be greatly appriciated.

|
show them a hog in a pen a few times then take a hog and tie a rope to his front left and back right feet. long enough to walk but too short to run. throw him in the woods without the dog knowing you have done it. let the hog get out of sight, then turn the dog loose where the hog hit the ground. keep repeating this but in different spots and letting the hog get more a more of a head start. after the first few times stop showing the dog where the trail is, let him hunt to find it.
or just go to mr masons.

well back in the day before i had a stike dog to train off of,,, i used the same methods i saw as a kid growing up with coon dogs..
i would take a shoat and drag it thru the feild leaving a good sent trail,, then tie him or put in a small cage make shure they cant see it when you turn them loose..
then go back to the house and get the dogs,, start them back off of the sent and walk them to it.. letting them find it on their own..
just keep adding distance and making it more difficult as time goes on..
someone may have a better method but this worked for me when i was starting out.

Find someone that will let you run your dog with their finished dogs this will be your best bet. I agree that bay pen should be started to see how the dog acts around hogs and to teach them how to bay a hog once found. Drags are good but do not over do it. You are welcome to join us in a training session.

I like turning bigger hogs out with a couple legs tied, like a hay string between a front and back leg... tun him loose, and let him get a bigger head start each time. This way the dogs still have to sit him down to bay, and you're gonna build the dog's confidence(most important part IMO) that he can find and stop a big hog by himself. I'll even do this with older dogs that might need a "pep talk" |

Man its pretty funny but guess we are all one in the same.I started years ago just like was said draggin through the woods and got it from where the red fern grows as a kid.Guess thats why Im partial to those hounds!

thats a great movie , it was filmed about 10 miles from where i grew up here on the illinois river. alot of my freinds where in the original film and the re-make a few years ago..

thats a great movie , it was filmed about 10 miles from where i grew up here on the illinois river. alot of my freinds where in the original film and the re-make a few years ago..
Dennis Ingram has some nice looking redbones they used in the remake. He goes by IKE on some of the forums. Nice guy, with nice dogs. |

Craig,cool thing is this ol man just gave me a dog named Dan about 2 months ago and I cant get rid of him if I tried.Bays alright but just picture him runnin through the house while my ol ladys moppin!Half redbone half cur but all ol'dan!Rockin chair dog regardless and I never have those!

thats funny mex, now all you need is a little ann  the store the boys grandpa has in the movie is just down the road from my house and they cook home cooked food on weekends,, i ride my horse down there and eat on weekends,,,, it has been in the same family for almost 100 yrs.. they have lots of old stuff in the store still.. |
