I honestly would be willing to say that 500 is very realistic to some of the dogs owned by guys on this site and some not on this site. I know my last post didn't exactly answer your question about 1 dog striking and holding 500 hogs but if a buddy and myself could catch the numbers like we produced with a few decent dogs then there ain't a doubt in my mind that there are dogs out there that have struck over 500 head.

I have a junky little yella dog that is alittle over 3 that is probably halfway to the 500 mark BY HERSELF... She has been pretty much my only strike dog for the last two years... Other than hogs caught with my buddies dogs and one of my other chit eaters getting lucky...  If my no account dog can catch that many, guys with sure enough good dogs and good spots to hunt shouldn't have any problem...

Now if you want to count hogs she found but we didn't catch, I'm sure it's over 500 but she sucks...  Azn

Cool. Justin and Wilbanks you guys answered it in a way that I can see it happening. I guess my whole basis of the question was dang there are a lot of people throwing out big numbers and I just can't fathom there being a great dog like that in every hunters kennel! I've been going hard for a year and a half by myself and I sure don't have one that good. Don't think I'm green to this though I've been on my own for a year and a half but before that I spent time hunting with guys that had been at it for 10 plus years. Thanks guys. You guys sound like someone I'd like to invite hunting sometime where are y'all from?

I have a pit gyp that is 7 started using her as soon as she turner 1yr old.  Let's just say I only use her 20 weeks a year. And say I only hunt her twice a week, and say only use her to catch 2 hogs per hunt.  That's 480 hogs shes caught. That doesn't count the hunts where we catch 6-12 with her as only catch dog, or when I hunted 3-4 times a week, or way more than 20 weeks per yr.   majority of those hunts she is the only catch dog.  So I would say her numbers are way higher than this.  At this point she is showing no signs of slowing down.  I may get 2-3 more years out of her.  All those catches and only been cut 4 times, 3 of those were the first year, and one was last year.  Ear every catch & 80%--90% of those are right ear!
I have two bay dogs that will be 3 end of May.  In June of the year they turned 1yr I lost the only old dog I had.  So they had to step up and be the dogs.  That winter in January & February I kept track of caught hogs, it was 141, or 144 I don't remember, I would have to find the calendar & look to be sure.  So it would be safe to say they have been on 400 to 500 already.   So when we do the math the numbers are higher than we realize.

I dont know anyone that hunts just one dog...but it is very practical for countless individuals to have 1, 2,4 dogs on well over 500 hogs in a lifetime. I can think of 8-10 people that catch 150-200 a year and have the same dog(s) on every hunt.

Not just with hog hunting but many different things...I have thought if I havent done it or seen it...it doesnt happen..but experience and time will change your mind.

Just five hogs a week gets you over half way there in one year alone.
