55 gal barrels for dog houses

I was wondering how some of yall suspend the barrels off the ground? pics would be great! Im just in the process of building kennels and would like too know so i can clean the kennels and the dogs have a place to go. and do yall cut the hole end off them for the dogs to get in or a little opening? and what about drain holes if water gets in them? just trying too figure out whats best! thanks in advance

I use all barrels and got some little stands out of square tubing. They work good for cleaning. I just cut half the front off in case you want to put hay or shavings in them in cold weather. Just drill you some wholes in the bottom to drain.

I run pipe through the panels across all the kennels. 
Then just put the barrel on the pipe and a piece of plywood in front of it.

I just used light gage chain eye bolts and fender washers.  Has worked great for me, leave enough lip on bottom to hold the bedding in during the winter.  Like ETHH said I just drill a couple holes in the bottom for water to drain.  Hope this helps.

Just thought I'd share mine... I cut a round opening on the end of my kennel run(s) and placed the barrel through the opening and on the outside of the kennel(s) I have a pipe frame that runs the entire length of my kennels where the barrels actually rest on...


Hope this helps... One thing is fo' sur... there are various/numerous ways to use the barrels for your dogs BUT one thing is certain -- "the best way is the way YOU will be most content or satisfied" -- at least that is the best way 'in my opinion'

I have close to 3g.southtexas but I didn't run a pipe all the way down my kennels in the rear to hold the barrel. I made a U bracket in my shop out of 2inch tube an concreted each one in so I can push mow around and underneath the barrels. I had the barrels inside the kennels they just seemed to always be in the way while doing something. I saw another fellows kennel and went home and remodeled mine, seems to make 10x10 kennel bigger. just my opinion.

I dont have a very good pic but here are a couple and you can get an idea !! Pretty much like everyone else but i only cut a small square I did that so when we had those cold snaps it would help keep in some heat at least that was my theroy .. eventhough im in FL we get down in the 30's and for us being used to 90's- 100's thats pretty cold !! LOL  Also i just used u bolts that fit the 3/4 inch emt that i built my pen out of to hold it in place then hang the the barrel out the back so you dont take up kennel space and now just  set them on blocks !! i also drilled about 10-20  holes in the bottom cause when it is really hot i spray them down to cool them off !! another thing i learned was to put the holes for the screw in caps on the drum to the back and horizontal cause if you ever have a female with pups in one the pups get out those 2 1/2 inch holes pretty easy and you will find puppy's everywhere LOL

Hey guys thanks for all the pictures and replys yall are alot of help i think im guna do them like 3g southtexas beause it doesnt take up any kennel space i like that idea. not sure yet tho got some good ideas now! thanks yall

A friend of mine has his this way w/ dogs chained to them but it may work inside you kennels.

Take you a good sturdy long pipe and weld a piece of wide channel iron on top like a T w/ the channel facing up.  Drive the pipe in the ground leaving the channel a foot or two above the ground.  Lay your barrel in the channel iron so it kind of cradles it and bolt it down.

For barrels that  are out in the weather, I cut another barrel into 1/4s.  Split it long ways then across the middle.  Bolt one of the 1/4s on top of your dog house so it hangs off like an shed.  Keeps blowing rain out.

I also drill a few small holes in the bottoms to let any water drain.
