That's all fine and good unless you're only running one dog and as soon as you get there he leaves the hog and then what ya gonna do?? The Original Setxhogdogs If the dog is smart enough to roll out when other dogs get there, he's smart enough to keep the dog bayed until the bulldog hits or other dogs are bating the hog.

My main dog is the same way. Has been for a while. If he knows there's other pigs around hes gone when the cd gets there or sometimes he waits till I leg the pig. But if he hangs around I kno were done for that area. I like but it can get annoying when your tyin one and he gets another bayed and it just keeps goin and your wantin to stop lol but I'm not gunna complain any. I wouldn't want to stop it. I agree with the previous posts, it shows how smart they are. And also very hard to find.

Send the bulldog from farther , that way the hogs caught an he leaves you tie him or whatever an he will go get bayed on another , now when your ready to go home this will create a problem , my dog does this an it can be a pain when you are tired an ready to call it a day an the dog is still ready to hunt

was the dog this way before you started [ trash whoopin ] it ? don't sound like the dog is intentionally rolling out to hunt sounds like he is , like you said scared you gonna whoop him . I would spend time in a bay pen with it and see if you can correct the behavior . dogs rolling out to hunt is not as great a deal that every-one thinks it is lol . but a good roll out dog will at least be there TILL THE HOG IS CAUGHT not leave out before .

I agree on some except the part a good one will stay till caught. If i hunt my Superman dog by himself he will go strike a hog bay tiill i walk in with a catch dog and stay till i leg the hog. If i hunt Superman with another dog and he strikes ansd the other dog shows up you better hope that dog knows how to bay cause he is rolling as soon as the other dog shows bayed. I LOVE IT!! WHen you catch the first one he will have the 2nd one bayed already. Is there something wrong with Superman doing that? Should i cull him?

I wouldnt have a problem with him rolling back out after the hog is caught. Earlier in the hunt he had a shoat bayed by himself and he seen me walk up and he took off, again like he was in trouble. No he wasnt like this until this year when I started correcting him off of armidillos. I really dont want my pup to start doing the same thing and that is what Im concerened with. I think I will keep hunting him for now to see if it continues. I have a Plott X Mt Cur pup that is about to pass him up anyways. He will actually stay there till I get the hog caught. I agree though I need to work him in a bay pen to let him see that he is doing exactly what I want him to do and that is to bay a hog with me standing there. Im sure it will be a trial and error type deal. I sure hate to not hunt him because he will get yonder to find a hog. Here is a pic of him. He is the one on the 4 wheeler

Yea I might have to do that. I wouldnt mind him finding the hogs and baying them and leaving as long as the pups didnt start doing the same thing. I would like for at least 2 dogs to stay and bay and hold the hogs attention until the bulldog got there.

I think you have the answer the question of "is he afraid of you" first. If so, you have some work to do, if not, do as BA-IV says.
We often dicipline dogs but do we priase them the same? I persoanlly would try to heavily praise the dog by catching the dog (obviuosly after the hog is caught and tied) and walking him to the caught hog. I would the praise him at the caught hog and let him know you are okay with this. Maybe leave another bay dog close by that will continue to bay. Do this at the hog, not back at the four wheeler or anywhere else. Priase him and let him go back to baying. Sit down and let him know you are accepting his new behavior. He will know by you being in a sitting position that you are submissive the behavior.

Yea thats a good idea. I try and praise him every chance I get on a hog but he usually aint there to praise, lol. Im thinking on the next one Im just going to sit back and let them do there thing while Im around. Maybe that will show him that Im not going to dicipline him but that I am accepting of what he is doing. Hopefully this weekend I can try that out.

I agree and the same with my dog. He will die on my yard as well. I could never get rid of him. I started out hog hunting with him. I got him when he was 6 weeks and still dont have a clue what the sire is to him. He will sure enough go out and find one for me I just have one problem with him that I can hopefully fix and if not I guess Ill just have to deal with it. I just have to take some time to try and correct it.

Thanks for the advice. Ill sure try it. He has never been shocked off a hog. He has just got whooped off some armidillos and I think he thinks Im going to whoop him off the hogs as well which is clearly not what I would do but he thinks thats whats going to happen. I will just have to work with him and see if I can get him to stay and bay while Im there.
