advice from jagd owners

Just got one, cool little dog, male about 3-4 months, smart, taking to basic commands well. hyper, INSANE, lol

I guess for now I'm keeping him in the house, using the crate method for house breaking, seems to be working well, he gets a long with the other dogs, did get in a growling contest with one that I wish I'd videoed.. but other than that he is doing good.

What my questions are is, when is the best age to start one? I haven't had a terrier before and was curious.

they can start young but I would wait till 6 months before letting him on a hog and then just a small one that won't hurt his feelings.

I think you're doing the right thing by keeping him in the house for now. He'll be so much more manageable down the road because of it. I started off crating mine for a few months when I first got her. After she was house broke, she moved to being an outside dog during the day and coming in when I get home from work. She sleeps free in the house and doesn't cause any havoc at night. I think because she gets so much human interaction and expends her energy messing with my wife's dogs that she isn't such a terror. Jags can start on any game early, but if you don't get the discipline down first he'll just be a hard to handle no listening nut job in the field. Some jagd guys like that though.

Bout 6 months.

Personally I would always work them on a big hog.

Dont let them get too gritty...(not like you can help that really) but once they have confidence....put them on a big pig so they know they can get their butt kicked.

Also.....once they have matured. Do not pen males together. Both breeders I got pups from told me that and I learned the hard way. They may get along for a year but they will eventually fight....and it is not a pissing match...it is a fight.

My experience with Jagds are only bout a year and half  and only with my personal dogs. So this may not be in general.

Those guys need JOBS, too young to start hog hunting with in my opinion. So I would find another job, teach him to retrieve, which both my males picked up naturally, then you can teach, play, and build a bond at the same time, all preparing for the future when you will need them to listen. Take them swimming and retrieving, then you can use them during dove season to get your birds. You can start tracking him now on scent or blood. Basicaly there are alot of things the dog can do now, that will knock that excess energy off, and make him a better handling dog that won't interfere with him being a hog dog at all. The growling needs to be nipped in the Bud now, sure its cute because they are small so small to be so tuff but later on that will becoame a problem that started early and could have been prevented.

i personaly think they need all the time you can spend with them. they are very agressive dogs your job is to direct it in the proper direction. i start mine on hogs about 6 months but bump is right they need to be started on a larger hog so they dont become to gritty. and dont ever let them get away with any dog agression what so ever it will only become worse over time.

My wife is working with him on the basics, sit, lay, etc, I threw a ball a few times the other day and he didnt show any interest in it. might be still a little young for chasing a ball, dunno.

Was thinking about 6 months, yall start em in a pen or in the woods? Im not a fan of baypens but was thinking because of his size maybe I need a more controlled enviromet.
