Night and/or Day dogs

I hunt 95% at night, hogs are nocturnal and generally stir more at night, plus its cooler... I hunt my pups at night as young as 6 months, it exposes them to coons and other nightime critters so they can be broke off them at an early age...as for older dogs, mine hunt the same day or night, they are a little more rangy at night, some folks say their dogs wont hunt at night, and they use the same line about hunting off 4 wheelers or horses... I think its more of an excuse than anything... a HOGDOG should hunt day or night, horse or 4wheeler, open or thick... A dog is not finished until he can repeatedly and proficiently handle any situation thrown at him, and thats the main thing that separates a GOOD dog from a FINISHED dog, they have to be versatile...and that takes years (for the guy that tried to sell me a 1.5 year old finished dog for $1200!!!)  Its just my opinion tho, im a harsh judge on dogs... If he is scared of the dark tape a flashlight on his collar I no more hunters that arent comfortable with hunting at night than I do dogs

I AGREE I LAUGH ABOUT PEOPLE SAYING THAT THEY HAVE A 1 OR 2 YEAR OLD FINISHED DOG THEY MAY BE A GOOD DOG AT THAT AGE. BUT THERE NOT FINISHED  rolleyesAND IM THE SAME WAY WE HUNT OFF OF 4WEELERS AND HORSES AND MY DOGS HUNT THE SAME

 I disagree.  I think some dogs hunt better at different styles. Pull up to sign and cast the dogs. Road them. Walk hunt them. Horse back. Wheelers. I think it would be hard to find a dog that hunts the same no matter how they are hunted.

THIS IS TRUE SOME DOGS HUNT IN DIFFERENT STYLES. BUT HOW EVER I HAVE SEEN SOME PEOPLE WALK THERE DOGS IN AND HUNT AND THEY BASICALLY WALKED THE DOGS STRAIT 2 THE HOG THIS IS FINE AND ALL BUT I PERSONALLY WANT A HUNTING DOG AND BESIDES THAT ALL THE PLACES WE HUNT ARE WAY 2 BIG 2 WALK AND HUNT. I DO NOT WANT 2 DO THE HUNTING 4 THEM. IF THIS WAS THE CASE I HAVE A FRIEND JAMIE THAT I CAN PUT A TRACKING COLLAR ON AND TURN HIM LOOSE WALKING AND HE CAN FIND AND BAY ME HOGS LOL. JUST KIDDING AND I HAVE SEEN DOGS PEOPLE TURN LOOSE IN HOG SIGN 2 FIND HOGS BUT. I LIKE 2 TURN LOOSE AND LET MY DOGS WORK AND GO HUNT NOT WALK WITH THEM 2 THE HOGS. AND I DONT WANT 2 GO FIND THE HOG SIGN FOR THEM AND THEN TURN THEM LOOSE THEY SHOULD BE ABLE 2 FIND IT ON THERE OWN. Dogs respond off of cues thats the reason why you can use the same dog for different jobs.  They dont know which job they are supposed to do because they can read minds, or because you said "we are working cows today so be sure you don't go looking for hogs".  Its because when you load them up in the cattle trailer with horses that cues them that you are working cattle.  Or load the 4-wheeler and cut collars in the back of the truck they got hogs on thier mind.  But if all your dog has ever done at night, was sit in the kennel they are'nt gonna be cued into hunting.  But they will learn to hunt at night and the dogs with high drive obviously will learn faster.  One time my step mom wanted to go hunting, well all the time my dads dogs had seen her it was time for petting,  so they just thought it was time for a trail ride.  lol.  She went hunting with us several times and it was that way every time.  But they would hunt when she was not around.

  Apples to apples cant be made in the dog world. I think some of the hardest hunting dogs,that I have seen ,are the ones that  are cast by their owners.

  Your rite dogs like that dont come up for sell very often, and like I said it separates the GOOD dogs from the FINISHED dogs, If they wont do it all they are still on the road to being finished, and if you sold me a finished dog that didnt handle anything I threw at him then he is finished in your situation but not mine... making him started, not finished. Im not dogging anybodys dog, but if they cant do it all then they still need training.. Brings up the point that there is no finished dog 2yrs old even tho he will find a hog there is not enough hours in 2 years to finish a dog completely. there are plenty good dogs that consistently find hogs off a 4wheeler running down the road in fresh hog signs, or off horses where you walk them up in hog signs, or in the day when you see hogs to point them to,some go deep, some stay close... why wouldnt anybody want a dog that did all that and knew when to do it on his own? If its a hog dog it should not matter when where or how... most folks never been in the woods with a truely jam up finished hog dog,   and those that have no what im talking about. I dont mean to offend anybody tho, if you like your dog and he hunts the way you want him to thats all that counts... I guess i just expect alot out of mine and like pushing them  to make their whole life a learning experience
