I suppose my start was ridin in the saddle with my dad until I was big enough to ride on my own ..blowing horns no tracking collars, hay string no hobbles or tie ropes and no bulldogs just black mouth currs... But that was a few years ago them dogs are long gone but memories like those last forever...

I grew up having a lease loaded with hogs, I walked those woods nonstop growing up and gave the hogs hell with my 30 30.......my junior year of highschool I worked at gander mountain and met a guy that ran dogs', I only knew of a handful of guys that ran dogs (all of which were quite a bit older than I am) and I wanted in but had no idea how to go about it or who to talk to, I asked him a couple times but for one reason or another we never did go....drank alotta beer together but never did make a hunt........ anyway I left the job and didn't talk to the guy again for almost a year. I went to drug test for a job and the same guy is walking out of the drug testing place......we bs'd for a while and I asked him if he was still hunting and if he had any dogs or puppies he would sell me to get started and mentioned that I had a big place loaded with hogs to hunt but no dogs and didn't know anyone.......his response was something along the lines of "when are we going" lol.......longer story short he had 2 litters of pups on the ground (just some ol mixed up curr dogs) and told me 100$ a piece and to come look at em.......he then asked again when are we going hunting and I replied I'm ready whenever, it will be 100$ a hunt  Grin..... we ended up making a deal and trading a pup per hunt.......I picked up 5 pups, that was over 10years ago and he still hunts with me damn near everytime I go lol, he owes me a least a solid million haha, we ended up becoming very close friends and hunting partners and are still to this day.........I would still rather have him next to me in the woods than just about anyone else. Sometimes I think I should whoop him for getting me into this, never had a more expensive hobby but I do love being in the woods and I've always enjoyed working with dogs.

We hunted 90% of the time off horseback..........I still enjoy it FAR more than on 4wheelers but until I have the land to keep horses I'm stuck on a 4wheeler unless I go with him. Now days I hunt horseback every chance I can but its about 75% 4wheeler 25% horseback.....

All the dogs I started with are long gone, I've owned some great dogs and some not so great since then BUT I know that I will never have dogs as good as those crossed up mutts...........I am a firm believer that you CAN make a decent dog good and a good dog great if you hunt them nonstop.........we used to hunt at least 5 days a week EVERY WEEK, we still laugh about it but its true, we both had bs 12-14@hr 40hr a week jobs and the only reason we even worked em was to pay for our hog hunting habit, I stayed at his house more nights then I stayed at my own. It was get up, go to work, get off work, go to his house and load the dogs and saddle/load his horses and be hooked up ready to go by the time he got home, we would hunt to 11-12 at night or longer depending on the dogs then go home and do it all again the next day........I sure miss those days sometimes........ A word of advise to all you youngins..........HUNT every chance you get now, the real world ain't no fun!!! Cry

I was raised my whole life running walker dogs on deer. About 10 years ago it got to the point running deer dogs became very unpopular with the increases in deer populations. Prior to that everybody liked to hear them walkers hammering because they knew they were gonna get a chance at a deer. About 6 or 7 years ago we started having problems from pigs on the farm. I started shooting and spotlighting hogs every chance I had. Learned pretty quick without dogs I wasn't gonna do much good. Called a couple guys and had them come. The only way we allowed folks to run on us is if one of us was with them. It worked for both is and them because they killed hogs and we took responsibility for access to adjoining properties. If anything was said It was directed at me not them. Eventually about a year ago I decided if I wanted dogs available whenever I needed them I better get my own. Started with my Kane dog then added 2 more then 1 more to get what I have now. It has been a learning experience but the basics were there from the walker days. One day I will make this muttly crew into a pack I can be proud to put on the ground in front of anyone.

As a kid i had access to thousands of acres with no neighbors, dad got me a little black and tan Fl cur pup from a rancher he knew and me and that little gyp would be gone sun up to sun down hunting anything we could find.  After moving to the city as a kid (under much protest   Cry ) Never ran hogs until i bought my house 8 or 9 years ago.  My neighbor was a working cowboy and we hit it off from the jump.  he had a few mutts in the yard and decided he didnt wanna run gyps anymore and gave me his old wore out bag of bones.  Best dog ive ever had.  Good with my boy when he was born and would let anyone in the yard.  They just wouldnt be leaving  Wink

It all started out as a spring break trip for my son back in 2010 with Harry Bodle.  It was so addicting we started our own pack with Harry's pups.  The picture represent the excitement thats about to take place.

This is the beast we harvested that day.  The red dog was supposed to be a bird dog but he would eat all the birds before he retrieved them, so now he's a catch dog.

Aw the smiles and joy on our faces.

This is my son's dog a gift from Harry might as well equate this to a very bad addicting drug.  Can you say Hooked.

We use four wheelers and a polaris ranger 500 this is not a cheap hobby or sport but having an AWESOME wife does help, but she spoils the dogs real bad.  The red dog came home cut one time and I almost got ran off but he recovered just fine.  So here we are three year later going strong with 4 dogs.

verry true story. went with Clint from tomball dogos three black fridays ago. he had a piece of property had hogs deep on it.....keep in mind im a green horn....and he is a gritty red neck. well first time out had no idea whats going on. but just wanting to be "in"....he picked me up(got me out of shopping with wife)...went to sugerland off hw 6. droped dogs and bayed other side of jacinto river...again I have no idea whats up.....so we get close and drop cd about 200 yrds out....there is alot of lilly pads and the freekin dogs are drowining..... we can hear them...clint says to other red neck chit, we got to go get em...so.... they strip down in front of me...and im thinking these boys set me up.... thay want some of my virgin ars...wtf... cold as hell they jump in river and pull cds out. clint half nakid sayes to me grab his dog...so I did. Luca in hand I need to pass him off again to Clint cuz hog still bayed otherside of river...find good area to cross and Luca finally gets hog. im thinking I grew up in hood, surived the marine corps, and lots of crazy ness!!! but these boys are nutsz!! I got to do this again.  sence then ive learned go where dogs go, watch your buddy back(not ars) and get er done. Clint and I are still friends. he is still a crazy red neck and I wouldnt like it any other way....he beats up truck drivers father and son....CRAZY WHITE BOY.Grin

Started 24 years ago with a Yeller Cur and firmly plan on ending it with a Yeller cur.

Began hunting with friends and their fathers and grandfathers in the river bottoms of East Texas in the 80's. Bout the only place to find hogs then.  Never heard of catching hogs with pits until I was around 17. Everything was found, bayed and caught with cur dogs. Sad to say....but it was a hellu lot more fun back then. Them ole lopp eared rooter hogs would bay easily and stay bayed until you got there and worked em as long as wanted. Very few folks were into hog hunting and the ones that were.......had credibility to hunt wherever they liked vs all the drama of today.

Never heard of a man shooting any dogs around here......hell they would bring em back to you after being lost for weeks due to know tracking systems.

Still a young man........but feel I was lucky enough to experience the tail end of the era that was considered .....The Good Ole Days of Hog Hunting.

I used to be ate up with deer hunting, but had never heard of hog dogging until a guy came to work at my job who did it. After bugging him enough, he finally took me along on a hunt.  No hogs that first hunt, but it was the most fun I have had in the woods. I have had schutzhund German shepherds before, while i really enjoyed the dogs, I really didn't care for that crowd of people. In hog dogs, I saw an opportunity to have working dogs and enjoy the outdoors. I was instantly hooked. After several hunts, I got a pup off my co worker and one from one of his hunting buddies. I still have one of those dogs, and those guys have become some of my best friends. I could honestly care less to ever kill a hog. My enjoyment comes from watching the dogs work, and getting to be in the great outdoors. I never really realized how nice the country in NE Oklahoma is until i started hitting a bunch of different spots hog hunting. We walk hunt, horseback, or atv, whatever the property dictates. I prefer horseback, or actually mule back,  the most. I used to count down the days until deer season began, now I count down the days until it is over as we lose a lot of our hunting properties to paying deer hunters during the season.  I've only been hog hunting a little over 3 yrs now, and still consider myself greener than goose number 2 at it, but it consumes most of my thoughts and free time but I wouldn't have it any other way.

LOL!!! Great stories and pics!!! Well here is how we got started....

A little background history...growing up we hunted deer, but nothing with dogs. Didnt really have a hog problem around us! When we moved out here about 5 years ago we heard a little about it but didnt really pay any mind to it! About a year and half ago my husbands boss gave him a dog...a brindle curr about 6 mnths old...he didnt want him because he was tearing everything up!! lol So my husband said he would take him. I kinda frowned on the deal because we already had 4 dogs that were pets and a barn full of horses...I think secretly he was wanting to start a pack of hog dogs!! I told him not no but HELL NO!! I didnt want a bunch of barking ass dogs chained all over our place!! And I didnt want to take a chance of them getting loose and running horses and all that. Well this pup, who we call Ammo, bayed everything in sight when he was turned loose! Drove me crazy!!! Well we had some friends down the road that had some hunting dogs and they invited us along to hunt one day...so we went. The hubby was all excited! Of course we didnt catch anything, but it kinda sparked my interest...I love being outdoors...so we started talking to an old timer thats a really good friend that used to hog hunt all the time. He said we could build a bay pen at his house to start our pup, Ammo. So we did. And now we are hooked!!!! From the first time we took him to the pen he bayed his ass off!!! And there was something about watching him work that I just loved! So we started taking him to the woods with our friends' dogs...poor guy didnt stand a chance. Hunted with them 6 months and never found a hog. The dogs would trash and of course him being young he just did what they did. The old timer told us we needed to stop hunting him with their dogs so we did. We didnt hunt him till we got a shock collar and found someone with a trash broke dog...Just so happened this friend had a dog given to him because this person owed him money...well he saw the potential in Ammo and let us have that dog to train pups with. Thats where Yella comes in the picture!! Another curr dog!! Now this dog is a different deal!!! When I say trash broke he is trash broke 100%...a lot of people say thats impossible but he is...it took us a while to figure out how to hunt him because he wouldnt really go out and hunt! Well we had gone back and hunted with those people again and he wouldnt hunt with their dogs because they trashed the whole time!! Needless to say they cussed our dog and said he was a p.o.s. because he wouldnt go out and hunt with their dogs!! He knew better! Sooo they dont speak to us anymore!! We have finally learned how to hunt him and he has found a ton of hogs for us and trained our pups well!! Ammo and Yella are are our main men!! Both BMCs! Thats all we run and will always run that breed!! Those friends gave us a mountain curr because they didnt like her, so we bred her to Ammo. We kept 2 pups out of them and they are awesome! Real gritty and at 8 months old already finding their own hogs!! The male is suicidal, he will catch anything! The female got hurt a while back so she will bay till the catch dog hits then she catches! SOOO needless to say me saying no to it all didnt last long!!! I absolutley love it!!! There is nothing better than seeing dogs you started and raised be so successful!!! Its as good as seeing a colt you train go on to be a winner!! Which that is all we used to do and still do some!! Sorry for long story!! It just amazes me how far us and our dogs have come over the last year!! We are by no means professionals but we love it and our dogs find hogs!! lol

Yes I agree! I think they are the best too!!! Nothing against the other breeds thats just what we like! Our catch dogs are straight pits. They are about 45 lbs. which we think is big enuf for us because a couple of our bay dogs will catch when they catch and we have a help dog we always run with them that catches!!
