As far as the selling out goes I sold out due to family and work reasons. Sold some good dogs cheap too. They were dogs I would still feed if I had the time to hunt like I want to. This after hunting for 16 years with my own pack and I still have the itch in my blood. I just can't do it like the dogs deserved.

With that said there are those that HAVE to sell out but don't want to. An good dogs out there for sale for that reason. Just few and far between. Look at their old posts, amount of posts in the forums compared to dogs for sale, and ask questions of fellow hunters about the person/dog. Ask for references on the dog with people they have invited hunting etc... I was willing to give this and more if asked. I always pushed for the "buyer" to come hunt with the dogs and me. If they say they don't have a place I call BS. If they want to sell the dog bad enough they will find a place. I gave a two week trial on the finished cur dogs no matter what, and took them back no questions asked. I didn't give trials on pups or young started dogs, and catchdogs as I was burned in past on them. With that said if the person called back within a day or two with a problem I would work with them or take that dog back as long as they came back in as good a shape or better then they left, but not a week or more.

Granted though my best dogs went to friends free or cheaper then I listed them for because I wanted to keep track of these better, and they were out of my folks line.

Good luck and don't give up.

No hog hunter will sell a HOG DOG. Just my 2 cents
So your saying if you have a dog that hunts but not to your standards it's a cull? I've had dogs in the past that won't hunt but would hunt off the hood and since I don't hunt like that very often I sold him. I've heard from the man and he says that he made a half way decent dog.
Yep they are a cull. Who wants a halfway decent dog?

I will sell a dog that ticks me off just because I don't like them. But I will sell them to someone I know. Kind of like this girl I knew once. She would do what I asked but I did not like her. So I asked a guy I knew that need a girl if he wanted to go out with her But I am just honest and that is how I am. A dog is finished to me when I am finished feeding it. I will tell you the good and bad. But my bad may be just what you want and your bad may be what I want. Now I do a guy that will sell you a real good dog but it ain't cheap and you can hunt the dog. I can't afford him but I hear once the dog is bought it is bought. But the man has some real good dogs. So you can buy some good dogs. But for my money I will go with a puppy and take my chances.

A couple pups I got now may go up for sale if they keep ticking me off

If it is a cull to you than more than likely it will be acull to me

Man I try to type better than I talk but sometimes the typing leaves out a word or two that changes the whole thing. I will just say that you read that like a perv I guess I left the "know" "I do know a guy..." I ain't judging some of you ther guys or anything but it just ain't my thing. But you are a sick puppy. Good dogs can be bought!!   If you want to purchase a good dog be prepared to pay for it!!!!!   Money speaks a language of its own!!!   Be willing to pay $$$$  if a person has plenty of money to spend put the word out, and they can be found......

Sorry but you are wrong on that one, I have been hog hunting for a little over 10yrs and I just sold a HOG DOG yesterday to a guy off this site that has hunted with the dog and has seen with his own eyes what the dog will do...................... how do you explain that?

.........I understand that it is getting pretty dang hard to find a good dog these days with the huge influx of newcomers  joining and dropping the sport, I think this has alot to do with the overall lack of quality in dog sales, hence the unhappy customers that unfortunentaly  get the raw end of the deal that we read more and more about. I do however believe that true hog dogs can still be bought........just off the top of my head I know 2 guys that visit this site daily and both have bought their best dogs in the last 6-8 months........

At the end of the day, if you want to BUY a good hog dog you HAVE TO DO the homework!

May I ask why you sold the dog? Musta been something you didn't like about the dog unless you just don't hunt anymore.

I dont mind one bit, spoon is....well i should say was the #2 dog in my yard. I have 2 older males that are neck and neck hunting wise, smoke and spoon, when on the ground together they range Too far out for me from time to time......maybe not too far but further than I like...... on one hand its great because they hunt great BUT on the other hand i dont have big pieces of property to hunt unless I am invited,  AND i figured out that if i run them one at a time they tend to stay at a range I like. Smoke is rougher than spoon and i like rough..... i consider both of these dogs to be good puppy trainers...hunted individually they have worked great with my young dogs. Another reason i leaned towards selling him is that I think in the right yard he would be the #1 dog and someone else could use him more than I do......now whether or not he will be #1 in the particular man who bought hims yard is not up to me to say....don't know what all he is workin with!

I said all that to say this, i honestly enjoy workin young dogs as much as I enjoy any other part of this sport and the other day I saw a young gyp that honestly excited the hell out of me, and to my surprise the owner said she was for sale.... She managed to find the 1 and only hole big enough for her to fit in on a large horse trailer and was 6' off the ground and in the trailer full of pigs and caught before we could blink......it was a hell of a sight!

Lol not that it was important to add to the story but i am comfortable knowing I can still go and catch hogs without ol spoon and i havent been this pumped about a young dog in a while.

You ever walked up to a kennel with a buncha dogs and 1 just jumps out at you from the get go for some reason? That is what she did to me, i didnt ask to buy her, he told me he would let her go.....so on the way home the other 1/2 and I talked about it and decided that we didnt need another dog so there you have it, spoon rolls out and new gyp comes in.

BTW i didn't mean to be rude in my first post.....shoulda said that I disagree, not that you were wrong, my fault.

I never said he was a jam up good dog. All I was trying to say is you can sell HOG DOGS. Weather they don't fit your team or just not your style of dog. I don't see since in shooting a dog that has hunt but just not to ones liking.

I thought hard about shooting a dog a few weeks ago but decided to give him to a guy on here and told him if he don't like the dog shoot him but I thought the dog might be able to do something for the right person. Within two weeks the dog had helped catch a real big hog. (not saying this guy of all people needed my old chit eater just thought if the dog had a chance it'd be with him.)

And to further the point im the one who bought Justins dog and I couldn't be happier about it. So in the past month I've given away a good dog and bought a jam up dog so there are reasons people will come off of a dog.

Seems to me that you just ain't met the right folks... Chit, I've given a few good dogs away for free, and sold a few anywhere from 40 to couple hundred bucks cause they were started and running with the big dogs... Hell, I gave one of my lead dogs away just cause he wasn't what my pack needed and only reason I didn't sell him is cause he had 3 legs. That dog is still a hunting SOB and the guy loves him. Sounds like you just need to talk to the right kind of folks and quit trying to get ur hands on one so fast. JMO

thanks for the kind words Josh, hope you and spoon work out well for each other, I think he will do you a good job and like I told you on the phone, if he don't work out you know where to bring him back to!

One of biggest problems people have when trying to buy a hog dog is they are too impatient. Good dogs can be bought. I have seen it with my own eyes. People want a dog NOW! instead of doin ther homework an waitin on the right dog to come along. Me personally have never bought a grown dog bc I like to raise my own but that's just me

I tell ya'll what... I have messed with buying dogs trying to find the right finished dogs. But man if you are patient enough, and not a back stabber or poacher; good stuff comes to you. I just had an AWESOME dog given to me. Just being in the right place at the right time. And this is the second one I have had given to me. First one died. Just be patient, stick to your word, and always be ready to lend out a helping hand and it will eventually return!!!
