Been working the last two days on getting my colt broke and ready to hunt. Last night I rode Chris' gelding Stretch at the arena ponying my wild and wooly two year old, Cooper. Coop has only got about 6 sporadic rides on him in his life. I'll ride him once or twice and let him hang out in the pasture for months.Today, I round penned Cooper and rode him lightly at the house so he wasn't so fresh. This evening, Chris and I rode behind the office working out the horses in the "woods" and in a nicely leveled warehouse pad site. Someone was nice enough to hire a dozer and make us a great riding area :O). We were trotting circles, stopping, loping circles, and doing all the kinds of things a two year old needs to experience and be comfortable with before he is used in a hunting situation. Our ride lasted about an hour.

I haven't been in a mood to ride a horse in months. My poor crippled body doesn't handle riding well after a long lay off. I used to ride every day when I was being paid to, but these days I'm retired - an old washed up "Has Been" of a show horse trainer. My point is this - My butt hurts. My shoulders hurt. My legs hurt. I think I'll need about 750 mg of Vicodin to make my back stop screaming at me, and I'm still not happy that my colt isn't flexing correctly. If you are planning on hunting horseback, keep your horses AND yourself legged up. It hurts less than trying to cram 6 months of riding and conditioning into two or three weeks. Your butt with thank you.

This is a good point, I was test riding a few prospect horses a couple of weeks ago and I rode for about an hour two days in a row and I was feeling a little wore out to say the least.  It kinda reminds me of a slip n slide when you were a kid, fun while your doing it but you hurt in places that you didn't know existed the next day.  Grin  If you got one to ride I would say in a weeks time you can get your legs pretty use to it and after a coulple weeks your good to go.

Yeah, the hard part though is MAKING me ride my huntin' horse even when I don't have a horseback hunt in the near future. See, right now I'm motivated - we are going to hunt horseback in a couple of weeks. Afterwards, I am not going to be as dedicated to riding my huntin' horse unless I know we are going to hunt that way soon. Perhaps I will just make myself keep riding him. I like big moving English horses though and Cooper bores me to death :O)

yeah, i have prince here that i can saddle up and ride anytime. and he's very laid back and easy to ride(probably because he's about 22 years old, lol). since chris is trying to get a hunt together soon, i think i'm going to get some time in on him. maybe it will help prepare me a little bit.

Sean and Matt,

Start getting ready. Got our hunt lined up this morning. You have less than two weeks. We have horses ready for you, they are using horses, not pasture ornaments, and they are seasoned hog hunting horses. They are not going to ride like that stuff Mandi likes, but they are solid. We can hunt the last place we hunted up in Centerville, along with a larger place down the road.

If y'all want to plan a weekend of it, we can hunt Saturday and Sunday.  We can discuss it more this weekend.
