Becoming a 'fad' breed is what darn near ruined the APBT.

It's annoying when folks pick up a certain breed of dog jus' cause they think it's 'cool' or what have you. That's when you start seein bursts of them types of dogs in the shelters being dumped. You'd see people dumpin beagles because they 'bark too much' and want to 'escape and smell everything,' or people dumping herding type dogs because they 'nip their kids' heels and try to herd them,' or people who have terriers that dump 'em cause they 'dig up their yards' and 'kill small animals.'

Sorry, that just got me off on a tangent. lol. I just wish people wanting a dog soley for a pet would at least take the time to research what breeds were bred to do before they aquire one.

When would you say this began?

Ya know, I do see that in a good number of ads I have seen scattered across the internet for Catahoulas. 'Glass eyes!'
Them glass eyes alone can't find a hog, but that's where the breeding for looks comes into play. Back when blue dogs were 'rare'.....everyone wanted one. Then everybody and their grandma started breeding and selling blue dogs, and now you can go on petfinder.com and there's hundreds of them needing adoption....hell even craigslist.

On a side note, we have a retired spotted dog here with one half glass eye and she was a pork findin machine in her day, glass eye and all ;-)

I don't bring my bulldogs out in public much, but when I do, most folks don't even know what breed they are, because they think a 'pit bull' is supposed to be 12 inches tall with a 27" head, lmao.

the cat craze was in full swing in 1999 and I think 2003 was the biggest boom to the breed everybody wanted a  [ cool ] looking dog riding around in the back of their truck it has declined a little I suppose by now I don't know for sure . I quit selling registered cats in 2005 .  I got tired of trying to explain to little girls Catahoula's don't make real good  [ pets ] they are working dogs   lol .   the glass eye's are ok , but when you breed just to get double glass eyed pups for the public considering no other traits , well you get it  .

Once again popularity kills the breed every time. People generally start breeding for all the wrong reasons.
