summer hunting

new into this and I'm getting some properties lined out.. most of the guys I'll talk to  back down a bit because of the heat. who all still hunts and what do you do to compensate for the heat.

We usually become night owls....but really the coolest part of the night is just before dawn.....so hunting from 3 am til 9 or 10 usually works for me! Also leave off vests till u have a bay...And soak em with a little water helps too! Also keep plenty of fresh water available for ur dogs! I had an RCD nearly stroke out last Friday night she was caught for maybe 15 min and when I got there she had the wobbles! Immediately took off her vest and carried her to a creek to cool down! We then called it  night! With this Texas humidity the dogs can get burned out quick! I also cut down on food as well to keep em leaner and in shape! Just my opinions though!!

Night hunt and early morning. If you run vest get em off soon as you got the hog caught and make sure they can get to some water. That's what we do. Might wanna catch one or so and call it a night depending on how much work it takes for the dogs to catch him. It sure don't take long for one to overheat

I also heard that giving the dogs a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar helps with heat tolerance , don't know if it works but,  I do know them arabs drink vinegar like water   lol .

   cool them down and fast as possible , and put liquids in them sub-q ,  preferably  re-sorb  vitamins electrolites and glucose all in one dose  . I like it sub-q  because after they get hot they drink and puke drink and puke  ect. ect.

Here in southeast AR folks run at night. I prefer not to drop a dog till after midnight. I run mostly farms in the summer and with irrigation we have plenty of water.

We hunted all last summer and we hunted hard place we ran on was right on the river so worked fine for us....

Only draw back to hunting a place with an abundance of water is alligators and snakes... At least down here it is.

One rule that will keep you safe for the most part.

Summer Time Hunting .

That rule is never hunt a place that does not have water on it by that I mean tanks , ponds , creeks are rivers !  The more the better.  If its only got one pond and is 2000 acres you better know how to get to it in a hurry .  I never hunt in the summer time without the place having water that I can get to for my dogs in a reasonable amount of time  .

looks like water is best...in any form. thanks. if some of yall super hydrate dogs before let me know...i know before I go to the gym im full of water and minerals..i can sweat out 5 lbs of water in a hour...not shure if treat dogs same way

I know I dont post a lot on here but I always come to ETHD when I need an answere to a question or a problem i have not come across before ... I always carry a bottle of rubbing alcohol so when one of my dogs is to hot, i pour it on his neck and the pads of his feet, it will lower his temp by 7 degrees almlost instantly ...  also i carry a bag of fluids and an IV. if you cant give the dog an IV in the field, you can insert the needle under the skin between the shoulder blades like you are giving a parvo shot and squeeze the bag of fluids and his skin will hump up like a camel , this too will help hydrate your dog. but that is in  worst cases

the main thing is ur dogs r going to work for u in 20 degrees or 110 degrees, so dont be greedy and push em to far, in the summer u have to do a little more foot work and make sure the hogs r close when u drop em, thats what i do catch one r 2 and get the hell out

Apple cider vinager also prevents muscle fatigue and increases stamina. My ol lady is a health nut and she is always trying to get me to drink this nasty stuff. You can poor it into water to dilute it and it does the sasme thing. Make sure you dont buy the cheap stuff though. It'll be brownish looking. Its a bacteria called "mother" that causes this.

I prefer lean dogs that hunt at a steady pace. No point killing a good dog just to catch a pig.

I think if he didn't care if they were dead he wouldn't be asking. How do you get your dog to hunt like that? Tell em to slow down and chill out. When we let our dogs out that's not a choice. You must have one of those fancy DC-60 collars with the loud speaker on it so you can tell em "Slow and steady boys and girls! Don't want ya'll to over heat!"

You can slow a dog down by slowing yourself down. No fancy collar needed. You hunt for a bit and then grab the dogs. I don't have big places so dogs are used to being put back in the truck and let out. Watch your dogs when they come by. Carry water with you but my dogs find their own water most of the time. Go hunt your dogs in the day with water nearby and see what your dogs do. Mine will go get in the water. So I just hunt and know if the dog gets too hot they will find water and cool off. So I worry more about gators than heat. It gets hotter the gators get more active.
