Nasty looking day and am stuck here at the house again .  Bored !

I have seen lots of folks training young dogs over the years putting them on mock hunts staking a pig out some were in the woods letting the dogs trail to it bay it for a min are so then pull them back.

I also seen lots of folks have young dogs in the woods on their first second third hunts .  A pig gets found like lets say 125 little boar hog no teeth so he cant hurt a thing other than your young dogs pride.   But again I see young folks run up to the bay while the deal is going on and the young dogs are working good and they run in there and yank the hog down and its all over .   Sure its good for your young dogs no doubt.

But I say why be in such a hurry when you get there you see the hog is not big nuff to hurt anything but big nuff to teach them a good lesson if they want to get to ruff and every body wants to run in and slam the hog .

Why not sneak in and then you yourself back off take you a seat on a log and watch the show .  Watch the young dogs work let them get hit let them learn how to bay ,  let them learn what it is to get hit and just leave them in there for 10-15 mins maybe even 20 if its not to hot .   Lettem work , lettem learn instead of just running in there soon as you get there and slam the hog and its over and they have learned a little but noting of what they could have learned baying a wild hog in the real woods if you have left them down for a while .

Shoot man I get on a good 125, 140 lb boar hog with not much teeth baby its on with my young dogs .  I will get there leavem down and lettem get schooled ,  lettem get hit and see what it feels like ,  lettem learn to grab that ass when he tries to take off there is no hurry and there is no end to what they can learn by leaving them down a while .  Kick back take a video , and enjoy watching those  young dogs work and learn .

Another JMO .

Yall's ?

I couldn't agree more I don't have anything to add. I do the same thing I just take my young dogs huntin when their old enough. No mock hunts just the real deal. When I see them on a smaller pig I let em get after it.

Yeah Lacy man there is a whole world of difference between letting a dog bay in a control environment and letting them go at it in the woods in real time .  The dogs learn really noting much in a pen because there is noting in the way no brush , no briar's, no trees, no noting in the way no creeks no tanks noting .  These young dogs need to learn its not all about barking and running round and round in circles with noting in their way.  They need to learn they can get pin in the brush in the briar's and one are two ass kicking because of this in the real time in the real woods they don't forget it .   All the bay pen is doing is teaching them how ruff they can get and bad habits , thats about it .

I don't even start my dogs in bay pens ,  I will drive my trailer back there with a hog are two in it and walk off and lettem bay till their hearts are content and let them learn what a hog is then maybe one time put them in with a rank little hog so they can see he ain't gonna put up with all there BS and let them know he will hurt them after that its all to the woods and everything they learn is in the woods in real time .

Yup I may let em see a pig outside the pig young, but other than that its all real time. One of my young dogs got reallll rough on a big hog and she learned for it the hard way. I ve actually trained my cd same way. I ve loaded him up since about 8 months and would turn loose when I could see what I was sendin him in on and last hunt was prob his 8 th or 10 th hog and he's almost a year and I let him loose at 80 yards out and he caught on ear and was budging on a little 70 lber. Best experience I think

I made it a point to build my bay pen in some thick stuff. I agree with Jim. an open space just aint gonna teach them what all they need to know.

To me I can see putting one in a pen once or twice but other than that let em learn on the ground. I think as long as they have older dogs to run with they will learn better this way. I don't have a pen or access to one so if I start pups my only option is put them with the older dogs and let them learn. The learning curve can be steep tho so a man has to be prepared and understand they are pups and learning so expect them to mess up time to time.
