Mutt, if your outside of what they call a "Core" county, and on private land you can kill them. Thats how it was last year anyway.

But it was during the season only. In core counties, you better take a picture of the gator with your dog in its mouth when you shoot it.

You can't kill the gators here without a permit you get drawn for and pay for....and then only if you folow certain rules. If you DO kill one and get caught it means big fines and possible jail time. For killing something that can hurt you and your dogs and that is practically over running the state. On the river behind my house I can count well over 100 gators in an hour, just riding down the river......no wonder the fishing sucks!
And there are plenty big enough to eat a dog. When I am hunting and see red eyes coming to me or the dogs, its not good.
I had a buddy that bayed a hog on the edge of a lake. He got in the water about 50 yards from the bay (it was at night) and sent the catch dog to the hog which was in about knee deep water. Catch dog caught the hog and when he got there to leg the hog a 8-9' gator had his catch dog caught by the back leg and was dragging the dog and hog out to deeper water. The bulldog didn't let go of the hog so he grabbed the bulldog by the collar and had a tug of war with the gator while trying not to get hog caught at the same time. Finally took a dog leash and went to beating the gator with the lead and brass snap and got it to turn loose. Then he had to get the dog and hog seperated and get to dry ground quick.
He finally got away but the dog had puncture wounds and tears on his hind leg and carried scars the rest of his life.
Doesn't sound like my idea of a fun evening!!

My feeling is that they should give out as many permits as possible and still maintain a healthy gator population. In my county they only give out one permit. [/quote]
