Here in north florida we do alot of catch, cut and release. Found out the other day two other guys use the same ear mark as I do. I crop the top of the right ear. Just looking for some original ideas on a new ear mark. Not wanting to use tags due to carrying more equipment and the cost of the tags. Thanks.

We always cut the top off then slice it down a little ways. Before that we would cut a hole in the ear.

Most people can't cut a mark to make it stand up and read like it should...my family owns three and I mark with the one that I think looks the best and hopefully will make a pretty mount one day.

Ben, Can you tell me if Ear marks still have to be registered with the state. I know before they closed open range your mark had to be registered.

Now here's the catch. If you're mark was established before a certain date, then it does not have to be registered, they advise it but does not have to be, it's grandfathered in, anything after that date (I don't recall the date, ill have to search) it has to be registered. The oldest mark I own, is dated from 1914, so it's grandfathered in, but they do advise you re-register it but you don't have to. Here's the catch: you can run marked hogs here, but they have to be marked and barred on the spot a neighbor cannot lawfully kill a marked hog, he must notify you if he's on his property, or he faces theft of livestock. You face civil liability for the damage done. Livestock commission does not handle these cases, your local sheriff will and it's solely up to them as to what they want. We just had a case like this come up just a few months back and this was how the laws were read, and I spent countless hours on the phone with people trying to figure these laws out. They're pretty old fashioned and outta date.

The date is September 10, 1982.
By the way this is Louisiana law, and specifically the instance I recalled was for Vernon Parish. Bottom line is a mark is a mark. Alot of hog hunters don't honor marks. I still do, and try and make it a point to find out whose mark is whose, as should any hunter who marks hogs. Cuz I promise nothing will cause more drama then hog hunting, unless it's Facebook, they run a pretty tight race, and most hunters who still mark hogs get REAL defensive over you catching their hogs.

On my old lease in Sour Lake we marked a BUNCH. Boar became barrs and got a circle cut into their left ear and a 1/2 crop on their right as well as about 1/4 of their tail tipped off, sows got the same minus the barring Wish I still had places to do that but now days everywhere I hunt is catch and kill or don't come back
