Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog... A hunting dog is born not made...

Rueban, I agree with your statement completely.
and you are right about the smart pups sometimes don't make hunting dogs...but in my book the once in a lifetime dog is one that is a top hunting dog and has above average smarts to go with it...
I was just pointing out, that I picked that pup because she was smart. I have linebred these plotts where I know what most of them should be doing at the age I culled her & I will admit that 7 months is early to cull a dog but when you have 5 or 6 of her littermates all running & baying & she is just standing there, she did not meet my criteria. And yes, most of the very top dogs are super smart.jmo
There are some very good points made on choosing a pup & most will go with what has worked for them in the past. The only thing I disagree on what you said is picking breeding ability. I dont know how you can pick that until a dog proves himself in the woods & when he does, there is no sure fire way of knowing if he can produce himself until he has some litters that are being hunted. Not arguing, jmo Now also like you said if you know the ancestors of the dogs in the pedegree & their characteristics you should have a good guess on what the pups will do. We do think a lot alike.

I would like to find out, but she is bout 8 mth old n i dont wanna ruin her to soon IF she is to b used as a rcd or strait cd. Rite now with them piglets, bacon is supper territorial n protective, as any mother would be. Spook used to play with pig, another piglet i got while on the bumpers tourny, so what spook would take as playing, bacon would take as an assualt on her piglets. I think i would hav to put a rough cur in there n show her a few times first, but bacon is a pet n the 2 boars i got in there, r growin some blades fast n again, i dont wanna ruin her first rattle outa the cage. Any thoughts? Oh n i aint got a cd, just 3 really rough curs

I like the ugly yellow one's . Really its all a crap shoot unless your raising the litter and observe them everyday then pick what you think is best, but still its 50 50 after that whether they make dogs.

What bout a pup that wants to attack the weedeater? My catdo will run up behind me, brush my leg n latch hold of the shaft near the head n try to pull it outa my hands. If she comes from the front, she'll charge it, n as i swing it towards her, she'll roll right or left, spinning around n grab it the shaft. She is my house dog rite, just wonderin when should i start workin her on a pig. She will bay my pigs through the fence, but aint put her in the pen bc of the piglets.
Lol yup that's a keeper. also, what I was trying to explain in my first post.

well, I put bacon and her piglets in the round pen, turned spook and a yeller pup loose and from what I could tell, she was baying, but I could see bc of the 6ft tall sunflowers or some kinda yeller flower with a prickly stalk. either way, I don't think she tried to catch, YET!
