I had a gyp get a pretty bad snake bite to the nose last summer and was wondering if anyone has ever lost a dog to a snake bite. I've had dogs get bit in the past and all they did was swell up where they got bit and were fine in a few days. The gyp that got bit last year ended up going into seizures and then passed out. I ended up taking her to the vet and after a few days on an IV she was fine. Below pic was about 10-15 minutes after she was bit. Swelling got a lot worse and seizures started about an hour later.

I have had their old heads get bigger that that , but that's a good one . when bit around the head you have to watch out for their airways to get restricted . but I have never had a dog die from a snake bite . the bite doesn't hardly ever kill them it is secondary infections that will do them In . all ways put them on anti-biotics after a bite .

DAMN !!! I had a few cotton mouth bites to the shoulders and legs of the dogs but not to the head. The worst I've experienced with a bite to my dogs is swelling about the size of a baseball. I sat on a cotton mouth during Sept. Teal season in a duck blind before daylight. He got me right square on my butt cheek. The more time went by the worse it hurt until finally it quit hurting. I told my buddy after it happen he was going to have to suck the venom out, he said , it's been good knowing you bud.

That's what the vet told me, that the bacterial infection from the bite is worst than the bite itself

I lost a really good walker 6 or so years ago to snake biteS. the dogs bayed in a low water running creek and it took us quite some time to get to em. When I got there I could tell ol amos wasn't actin his self. Anyway I brought him home and noticed that his sides felt funny, kinda hard and tight in a way. the the next morning he was swole up on all four legs high and tight to his body......brought him to the vet where he passed away..... Vet said that he had been bitten multiple times........honestly though he did not swell up noticeably until the next morning....still scratch my head over that.... he was a my garmin for quite a long while! miss that ol dog.

they rarely kill a dog unless the dog gets awful hot. i usually just soak the bite in epson salt. Don't know how you would soak a dogs head though.

I've had just about every dog I've ever had has been moccasin bit and been just fine.
Did unfortunately have ONE young gyp get bit in the head and neck and she died by the next morning. Make sure the collar don't choke her.

She was the first dog I've had get bit that reacted the way she did. It may have had something to do with the heat as well, but not sure.

Is it easy to acquire dex? do you give it under the skin or in the muscle? Just curious but why do you give both? And what other situations is dex good for?

If you are in good with a vet you can get it! I give it in the muscle! I give both cause the pencillin keeps it from getting infected and what not! If a dog gets a pretty good cut I give em some dex to keep the swelling down just a little steroid make it feel a little better and not get swollen!

In the past I've had two dogs get bit and I only gave them penicillin. Whats dexamethazone? Dexamethasone is used for anti-inflammatory. Some vets use it before and after surgery, along with antibiotics, to help healing and prevent infection. Its a corticosteroid. About 20 times stronger than the dogs natural cortisol produced by their adrenal glands.

Never had a cm bite that I know of but I have had more dogs die of snake bite ( rattlesnake) than I have had killed by hog! Sounds like a rattler bite. Most time if they are bitten on the head they will survive if their air passage remains open.I now vaccinate all my dogs with a rattlesnake toxoid that reduces the reaction to the venom.Keep them on antibiotics to reduce a likelihood of infection. Also not all snake bites inject the same amount of venom. If a snake has recently fed then he may not inject much venom but there is no way to tell. I treat mine as if they receive a full dose of venom.Dexamethozone given as soon as possible after bitten wil help keep the dog from going into shock which sometimes is worse than the snake bite. If you give Dex, also always give an antibiotic.
