Alright this is gonna get a little long winded but I want to give the full details so I can get an accurate assessment. Here's how it started friend bought a dog that is around the two year mark out of a line of dogs that have been producing pretty good dogs for a while mine are still young but do good in my opinion. Back on topic he has not been exposed to hogs livestock etc never really worked or had any experience positive or negative. So he brings him down about a 6-8hr trip on a Sunday. We get our schedules lined up and are able to introduce him to a hog in my bay pen on Tuesday after he got here. Knowing he had no experience I brought my gyp pup that's pretty loose but solid bay to show him the ropes. Put a non aggressive hog in let the gyp get it started and put him in behind her. He sniffs around goofs off and barked a couple times at the hog as we pushed him around the pen its 80×80. Never showed much interest but wasn't spooked. So we pull em out let em cool off and I put a smaller hog that is more aggressive in to see if getting rushed etc would spark him up. Well got the hog in and before putting the dog in he rushed the gate and dog gets fired up barking like crazy. I got a little better feeling hog left the gate we put him in by his self for a min to see his response he stayed by the gate and walked by my buddy down the fence not paying any attention to pig. Well he jumps up on the pen and little salty boar maybe 100-125lbs soaking wet runs at him and hit him right between the legs about three times and the dogs literally turned ran from the corner he was in toward the opposite corner barked halfway and then jumped out of the pen and went and jumped back in the truck. Now i immediately got aggravated at this response. We went and check on him and he was super aggressive tried biting us etc. He had two small poke holes by his butt and on his tail. Any thoughts on this response any more details needed let me know.

X2 sometime we just need to slow down and realize dogs are not machines and there not hard wired and programmed to perform the way we think they should. When he got excited that was a good thing. I would have introduced him to the pig when he got rowdy to. When he didn't fire right in on it on his own. I would have pulled him back out and ran him with the other dog. He has no confidence and the little he gained he lost when the hog got the drop on him.build him back up and start over. I would get down on it, its his first time. After a while if the dog dnt kick in move on. Maybe try a cross hobbled hog in the open and not in the pen. Work it like you would a pup.

Thanks for the input was planning on putting the other gyp in with him as soon as I put him in the second time after he got excited well ole bacon got the drop within about 30 seconds of putting him in so didn't get the chance to try it again. I'm wrapped up with work till end of the month. So hell have time to adjust to the new owner etc before the next practice run

A very, very wise man taught me...go slow, if you want to go fast.
In correlation, let the dog go slow, don't rush him on the wrong hog. If he is going to make a dog, it may take a couple times. Going fast to early (using the wrong hog) can set you way back.
I use this analogy in everything I do. If I want someone to believe in something, I slowly introduce them; rushing them into something they do not know often is a waste of time and does not serve a good purpose.
You may not believe me and you may not take the advice, but it is good advice. Re introduce him to a gentle hog. Take him hunting and let him run; expect nothing. Go slow and give a dog time.

Man you said it. If more guys thought that way in all things we would be better of as a whole. I have seen some nice dogs get culled out be cuz the trainer did understand what he was doing slower is faster cuz you don't have to start over as many times boxers don't start with a title shot why should your dog lol

1 more option is to use a little bit smaller hog in a smaller pen and let him bay from the outside, i use a bb gun to rile the hog up, it doesnt hurt the hog at all but will often agitate it enough to get it moving which usually fires a young dog up, also i let one of my old dogs out to help fire the pup up. No need to put a dog in a pen when u can accomplish the same thing keepin him outside it.......not sayin u did wrong by any means, different situations call for different tactics, just offerin up somthing thats worked for me.

I had a supervisor that always said that and it is very true...
but like already said...the golden opportunity was when he fired up the second time and at that time a bay dog should have been let in to bay first and then send him in...
that little bit of butt whipping probably set him back for at least a little while...letting him in at the right time is always best as well as knowing when to take him out...just something to always be thinking about when working dogs and making the effort to make all the right decisions at the right time...sounds like everyone is saying about the same thing to you...good luck...

Thanks for all the help and input guys, I'm all for the slower is faster method. Had some faulty info from the current owner that got straightened out after this happened as to how much actual exposure this dog had was supposedly farther and had been introduced a little before I contacted the previous owners to get the scoop he is a complete newb no previous experience or I would not have used the second hog. He's not a big hog by any means just a jerk. Gonna give him plenty of time and work with him slowly just wasn't real happy about him completely leaving the pen wasn't expecting much but that part didn't sit to well with me.

One of my dogs climbed out of one pen and tried to get out of a second. Next thing I know she was trying to catch. She does pretty good now just trashy and that is a work in progress.
