First off you need to know that I don't hunt in the summer. Ok, I'm feeding Diamond High Energy about 2 cups once a day. One of my dog stays lean and never has a problem......... the other, not so much. Do I cut his portion down to 1 cup once a day or do I need to change dog feed?

Not stupid at all. Yes, he has been wormed and unfortunately not a lot of exercise. Like maybe once a week.

I usually adjust the food changes a little at a time rather than go from 2 cups to one all at once. Cut him back to 1 1/2 for a few weeks and see what is does. My dogs all get a little different ration depending on their metabolism.

lack of exercise is most likely the problem, I would just cut back on his feed a bit....... My dogs are the same way, if they sit up for a little bit then some of them get a bit round so I just cut back a little like you were saying........they don't require as much when they aren't hunting/working much.

I had a bird dog that stayed in our pool during the summer swimming...so much so that it bleached her hair a good bit, come september for dove season she would be ripped........pools/ponds are great exercise for a dog!

To me the fat dog makes sense. 2 cups no exercise trim the food back a Lil at a time down to 1 cup a day. My concern would be the thin dog receiving that much food with no exercise and staying thin.

as the weather warms up a dog needs less calories to maintain weight...from what I have read in the past the right balance of nutrients are based off of what the food manufacturer has put on the label for feeding instructions...so if it says on the bag to feed 2 cups a day and you are feeding one cup a day it is possible that the dog is not getting all the required nutrients even though it is getting enough calories to maintain weight...you can switch to a lower fat and protein dog food in the summer months...during cold and colder weather the dogs require more calories to maintain weight and quite a bit less during the hot months...I feed the same feed year round and my dog food bill cuts almost in half for a good while...I am sure that the dogs would perform better switching to a lower calorie diet in the hotter months that is properly balanced with calories and nutrients...

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog... A hunting dog is born not made...

I can let the other dog (1/2 BMC, 1/2 Walker) run around and she wont run off, if I let my Mt. Cur (the fat one) he's gone.

I feed Diamond High Energy in the winter when I am hunting a lot. I don't hunt much much in the summer either. I usually switch to Diamond Maintenance formula. It has a lower fat content and keeps the dogs lean in the summer when exercise is limited. It works for me. You might want to try it.

what 1 cup do y'all dogs weigh 15 to 20 lbs no i'm sure y'all don't got jagds ? If y'all hunt a lot then yall are hold back performance for y'all own benefits !!! My lead dogs get 3 1/2 cut a day an only eat what they need mattering on how hard we hunt! a cup is a hand full that's not proper care ! Not trying to tell y'all how to care for your dogs but dam if yall expect to have good dogs then feed them right !!

Muddog, I've had dogs that got a cup or two a day... looked good and could hunt everyday of the week.
If the dogs are fat, cut the feed back. Adjust the quantity you feed based on condition and performance...

Every individual dog has a different metabolism. I have some medium sized dogs that need about 3 to 3 1/2 cups a day to stay at a good maintenance weight, and I have some dogs in the same size range that need only 1 1/2 to 2 cups a day to stay looking right. Same thing with my terriers. I have one patterdale that gets 1/2 cup a day, and stays at a good solid weight, and I have another that needs 2 cups a day to stay right. It can be highly variable. You gotta go by the animal standing in front of you, not a chart on a bag. My mom-in-law has an Am Staff that is about 25lbs over weight. She only gets 1 cup of kibble per day, no shyt. You just have to adjust according to the individual dog. Oh, and when I say cup, I mean a legit cup, as I feed using a measuring cup as a scooper.

Well that's where my cup gets screwy. I use a old cottage cheese container about 4 or 5" tall and probly 4" across so I shoulda said scoop I guess. It's about a quart I guess because I use a half gallon measuring jug to get out of bag into feed pan and I can feed 4 dogs on a hair over 2 jugs full.
