Starting out, want some veteran input

I'm fascinated by the stories and pictures and information you guys share on here. I'm tryin to start with my own group of dogs and already have a year old heavy started bmc that I've had since she was 5 weeks. She will probably turn into a help catch dog, bays good and hunts decent stays busy with other dogs but I just was curious as to how you guys teach dogs to honor a bay. And any other input y'all have on hunting in general! Thanks and God bless!

If she already bays good that's good. It's good if you can get a solid bay going and if she doesn't go to it by herself just walk her in. Let your CD go and let her follow or even just go in with you. Once she sees what all the barkings about and puts 2 and 2 together she'll start going on her own.

If you've got access to a place with alot of pigs just keep feeding the pups tracks...best thing for them is to get on hogs every time out...even if they don't hold the bay....great experience.

In your current situation im not sure how much it will help RIGHT now but it should down the road when you acquire a couple more dogs....Some will agree with me and some will disagree with me but this has worked well for myself and quite a few other buds of mine over the years....... When you find a good dog that produces hogs for you pen your gyp up with it or as close as you can to it so that the dogs create a bond of sorts, i will bet money that when she buddies up with it that she will go out and work better overall for you. As far as honoring a bay goes just keep toting her to the woods, like Kevin said....let her figure it out,  when she realizes that barking = hog she oughta get there quick fast and in a hurry.

Justin...you know it's funny how that buddy up thing works. My Bella gyp has been kenneled with or next to Jasper ever since they were babies. The other nite in the milo when the dogs were struggling on that second pig....she make MORE of an attempt to find Jasper when he barked then she would with buck or tater.

Yeah I hope to get some more before to long. That little cur of mine will bay all day long and will catch hard with other dogs, I'm super excited and what not because I've raised her since she was a pup. I think ill for sure try your way to get her to buddy up with a lead dog. Thanks for your input!

Kevin, i have seen it work more often than not, especially when refering to a young dog. Thats good stuff!

Something else that would help but too hot to do now is once they bay and she does start baying with the other dogs is to bust the bay and let her run with the other dog and she will learn to trail a hog! Like I said it is too hot for that now but good to do with young dog in the cooler weather!! I also agree with keeping them together I know it is not a 100% but I think it helps.. there are a lot of people on here that will give you good advice!!!

That is a good idea! She loves to chase a hog but she knows when to bAy she hates whenever a hog gets after another dog. She gets super super gritty whenever the hog tries to get another dog. The minute another dog puts a single tooth anywhere in the pig, she catches.

I would turn her out alone and see what she does. Have a catch dog with you. If you can find someone with a wooded pen that is at least a few acres that you know has smaller hogs then turn her out by herself. I for one do not want any help dogs. I want dogs that can find and stop a hog by themself. Then be smart enough to sit back and bay until the catch dog gets there. I have put a pig in a trap that has a covered top so the dog learns to bay. I first used hog panels to make a small pen but then the dog learned to jump over the panel to get in. Now I don't want a cur to catch so you can do it how you want.

I've run her in small built bay pens and she does good. I just don't know of any wooded pens around me.
