I have seem a walker dog that would coon hunt at night and run deer during the day. So with the right dog yes I think it can be done.

I know a guy that used his dogs to coon hunt at night and hog hunt during the day, but these were cur dogs.  Sometimes it was hard to tell what you'd get hunting at night time whether a coon or hog.

The old style cur dogs were mostly meat dogs, they'd do it all to feed a family and if you put the time in em, they'll still do it today.

I think this scenario is very possible....and I say that because it doesn't take much to bay a hog in a pen.  A little harder to get dogs to hunt different game in the woods.  I would think that most good coon dogs, deer dogs, and squirrel dogs would bay a hog in a pen.

When I was a kid my dad had a pair of curs he would gather cows with all week, then we would catch hogs with them all weekend and then at night they would tree coons as good as any hound. Those dogs were super smart. It always amazed me how they knew exactly what job they were suppose to be doin. Them kind are few and far between, I'm still tryin to replicate them

I made this cross to try and get some versatile dogs to squirrel hunt and hog hunt. I break my hounds off hogs or it would be hard to ever tree coons in some places we hunt. The walker is a good coon dog and isn't real tree happy he tries to make sure he has the meat before he gets treed. The bmc is a decent hog dog and is out of dogs used on hogs and bears we will see. She had 10 and 7 are yellow black mask I figured they would all be colored.

I have to disagree with the good coon dog baying in a pen . I am training several coon and squirrel dogs now and to be good at their job they better not even think on baying a hog in the woods or pen  lol  .  but I had two dogs that were cow and hog dogs they were both real good at it . the trick is to have them know what was what in the field and I managed to accomplish this with the cut collar .  no cut collar and we was working cattle , cut collar on hogs was the game  . when they were wearing the collars they would blow right on past a herd of cattle . one might be able to do it with coon and hog but it takes some serious work and a lot of time with the dogs . these two dogs stayed in the house with me and went every where I went till we learned each other inside and out .  I could call these dogs off of anything at anytime , I would take them to th e bay pen and if they started baying I would call them out and tell them no . after sitting at heal by my side I would put the collars on them and let them bay I did the reverse on cattle . one was my ol Catahoula Boudreaux and the other was one of his sons out of my walker gyp .   these dogs had brains and I think staying by my side and in the house helped to further develop that brain .

Shoot, tons of using dogs have more than one job. People all over work cows and hogs with the same dogs. I scold mine for messing with cows but any time I need them to find a cow for the neighbor I have at least one who I can talk into it! Lol
Heck I've got a pup right now who can tree squirrels and cats, go fimd the woods cattle behind the house and pester them, bay the penned hog, and will flat out go hunt a hog when I put him in a Lil sign. Heck, ce Friday morning I'm takin him to my parents house to catch a trap wise armadillo! A good cur dog shoud at least try anything you tell them too.

Now a hound on the other hand, has a more rigid mind. Once they learn what their after, you'd be harder pressed to convince them to go to something else, but heck they can probably do it very well too. From what I've read lionandboarhunter can use his dogs on hogs or cats equally effectively. So it's probably got a lot to do with the man handling the dog!

x2...also got to bring up the mutts...as a kid almost all my hunting dogs were mutts and I hunted them most every day even if it was a 1 hr run and sometimes twice if I could get away with it...but they hunted anything I put them on and did a good job at it...hand signals and voice commands, they got er done...keeping the neighbors hogs out of our fields included...

yeah they will go after anything anytime  . but having them know that you want to coon hunt at night and NOT mess with a hog. after letting a dog bay a hog in a pen and you turn out at night no way to know just what you are hunting . hell I never broke my dogs from coon or possums , but I don't hunt at night so no real need . the few times I did hunt at night the dogs would tree a coon or two .

I think folks what the gist of this thread is can the dog be coon hunted for COONS ONLY  after letting the dog bay hogs in a bay pen . and the dog be taught to not go hog hunting when turned loose or in other words not trash on a hog while out coon hunting . everybody knows cur dogs will hunt anything on this earth and others if we ever get there  lol  .

Out of all the dogs I've bred and owned, I only had one that would tree. He started trashing on coons when he was young and did it right and with style. I never tried to break him but I did finally get him to only hunt coons when asked. This dog was a super cold nosed hog finding machine in the woods. I entered him in a few bayings and he won about half of them.
I hunted him one night with a dog that Lee ann Rimes's dad had bought from Ladner as a coon dog. They wanted to see what he would do on hogs. They kept the Ladner dog on a leash and was going to lead him in to a bay. Old Gus made a big round and after about 45 minutes with without a hog, I knew there wasno hogs in the place. I blew Gus in and told them to turn old Ladner loose and we would coon hunt back to the truck. I grabed a limb, shook it, squalled like a coon and told Gus to get ahead. In less than five minutes Gus was treed on a layup that old Ladner didn't even know was there.
