just leave them penned together,  there is a certain amount of courting that occurs . is the gyp receptive or is she bouncing around when he approaches ?  when they are ready it will happen

I own a male bulldog that was the same way. I just did a breeding with him and my husband's old b*tch a few weeks ago. His prior owners told me they could never get him to breed. Well, I REALLY wanted this breeding to happen without having to go the AI route, so I decided to try as hard as I could to 'help' him. All it took was me putting him in the mounting position, and soon as he realized he was there, it's light a light bulb went off lol and he got to it. Managed two more successful ties with him with no assistance. Sometimes that's all it takes. He'd show interest in b*tches in season, and would 'flirt', but would never mount. Guess I just had to show him how, lol.

most of the time it takes a minimum of 15 minutes of getting to know each other before breeding takes place...but I make sure she is ready to accept a male before I put them together...

Mr. Reuben, you know I mean no harm with this but how exactly do you go about making sure she is ready to accept a male without using a male?

Make sure the female is flagging (tail up and to side) and not tucked tight between her legs.
Also does she stand still on her part and not try and get away from the male or fight off the male.
If she's not ready just wait another day or so. When I see the first few spots of blood on the ground I
count this as day 1. On the 11th day I put them together for a tie. I skip a day and put them together
again. It has always worked for me as long as I waited till 11th day. Any sooner and the female probably
wont be ready.

Yeah I pay attention to thsoe things but I guess I never wait that long, the only female I have at the house I consider breed worthy kennels well with the only male at my house I care to breed so as soon as I saw her bleeding the last two times I just started kenneling them together and next thing you know.....puppies! lol.............I just bred her the second time and she is starting to swell like a tick on a dogs ear......2 more weeks and the rookie class of 2013 with be on the ground  Grin

Maybe lay them on their side in the "spooning" position... Doggy might not be their preference  Grin

what Jimco said is 100 percent right...

on the 11th day I run my hand up and along the back side of her leg all the way up until my hand touches her vulva and if she poses or flags she is ready...if she doesn't I wait and repeat the next day...

sometimes I will use another dog to mount her (double check me) if I am going to make a trip for a breeding which I seldom do...

Nowadays I use my wife's Westie to see if the gyp is ready...
