Given the option of separating divisions for the 2009 TDHA Contest
How would you like to see the divisions split.

I am all for seperating knife and gun but my question is,

HOW many people actually only hunt dogs and gun that would enter the contest?

THe deal before was guys who you know have catch dogs and hunt with knives were all the sudden bringing in shot hogs for the contests. WTF? That is what turned most people off.

I voted Knife only.. no guns because I don't think the dog with gun ONLY population is much at all.

Splitting the gun and knife divisions is a great idea. Make them seperate jackpots with seperate payouts. In the gun division you can either bay up and shoot or shoot all you want with gun or bow. That would bring more money to the jackpot and more meat for donations.

Before I post how would this affect those of us that catch tie take out alive and then put a .22 between the eyes Sunday, clean them and head to weigh in?

You would just have to knife them instead of shooting before gutting.

I do not care either way but as a point of interest, that is not practical for me. All pigs are caught and tied, then get un-tied and put in a trailer. The biggest ones get a 22 in the head on the weigh in morning and the rest get to live........... Frankly, pigs are worth a lot more alive then they are dead and if they are not going to be weighed in, they aint gona get dead. I sure as heck aint going to catch them twice just to stick them with a knife.

Steve,

Would it be worth it to you to stick them and keep them cool, or catch them again if the money pot was large enough?

Or would you just enter the gun division on the ones that get a 22?

BTW,  Those were some nice cutters on that hog a few weeks ago. Very impressive

Let me start by stating that I/We entered the TDHA/Hunters Harvest contest because it was a good cause, not because we were playing to win. Also, because it was a good cause we did stick several pigs which we would not have otherwise (when we were on the ranch with a walk in cooler). Next year we will enter the TDHA/HH contest again and we will hunt the same way, no matter what the rules. If we have anything worth weighing in, we will fall into what ever category we fall into based on the active rules and our method. We will not change our method solely for the purpose of playing in one devision as opposed to another. Winning is not that important to me. I just hope that we have more to donate next year.

That being said, in any other contest, no it would not be worth it to stick them and keep them cool nor would it be worth it to catch them again(to me).  Keeping them cool is a lot bigger pain than keeping them alive is and if you stick them....... well, there is no coming back from dead. Think of it like a bass tourny. Keeping fish in the live well allows the fisherman to cull their catch while not wasting a valuable resource. Same idea here, I don't want them all dead, just the biggest ones. So far as catching them again, not worth the risk in my book.

So, I guess that we would just fall into the gun division............

I hope that makes sense. I am typing as fast as I can at work Smiley

Oh, and thanks!

Scott,

While I don't make the rule ( I am just an investigative reporter  Shocked )
I think that is where we are heading. One team can enter knife, gun, or both.

THat seems reasonable. The gives the people who hunt with a gun and the people who may use a gun on a bad hog a place to go with hogs.

YOu would be looking upwards of $200 to enter both...
