Dogs ears...

I have a dog that means a lot to me. He's my 8 year old squirrel/coon dog/beloved family pet. For months now he has had some major ear problems. It's hard to describe but the last half of his ear will get huge sores/scabs that are full of blood. they will sometimes have places that are probably 1/4 inch thick. Then they will randomly bust and the process starts over. I've never seen anything like it. I'm 99.9 % sure its not flies or knats that are causing it (and I know they cause most dog ear problems). He is loose in the yard and I have 7 other dogs that are in pens or chains and they have no problems. I have a great vet and the first thing he told me tro try was "vetrycin". It is for antibacterial and antifungal. I did it 1-2 times a day for over a week and no results. So next we tried a thick, purple, strong smelling substance (cant think of the name). Its put on once a day. It hasn't had any luck either. Has anyone ever had anything like this before? I am open to any and all suggestions.

 sounds like a real bad ear mite infection . you need to TOTALLY clean all that out of it's ear and treat for mites . some anti-biotics and steroid drops wouldn't hurt as well  . did you take the dog to the vet and have it looked at and or eliminate a yeast or mite infection or was it done via a phone conversation ?

I've brought him twice.  They packed his hears the first time with some stuff (think it had antibiotics in it) and gave me the vetrycin to spray on the ends.  Then I brought him back and I got this new purple stuff.

  well I don't know did they scrape them and do a culture screen or anything if not i'd find a new vet  .

My bulldog had a similar deal going on with his ears. I used nustock on them and within a week he was all healed

I had forgot to mention I started nustock two days ago.  Had a buddy start using it on his dog cuts and said it worked great.  I figured at this point it was worth a shot.  I'm just curious as to what is the actual problem.  Never seen anyting like it.  Its like blood swells up in huge sores until it gets so big that it busts.  Then it re-scabs and does the same thing over.

if it is ear mites his ear canal should have a thick ear wax build up...also, if he is around your other dogs they should be having ear mites problems as well...

what has worked for me when it comes to ear mites is 1.5 cc of injectable ivomec...inject it under the skin...I use that amount for a 40-60 pound dog, and I pour about that much in the ear and rub it in...a week later I inject 1 cc under the skin and do the same a week after that...if it is ear mites it will kill them...about the easiest procedure I know to use...he should be having problems with both ears if it is ear mites...but like already mentioned...the vet should be able to tell you if it is a bacterial infection or ear mites causing the infection...

Is this safe to do if he is already receiving the 6 month heartworm shot?

I just treated all my dogs exactly how I mentioned...I had tried several home remedies and the ear mites kept coming back...then I remembered I had treated my dogs this way years ago and treated my dogs...never had a problem with it then...now if your dog is a collie type dog I wouldn't do it...just make sure it is mites...the mites feed on the dogs blood and the ivomec will kill them...

The vets around here (saw ark/north LA) offer a shot that is a heart worm preventative. It is good for 6 months. It is very convenient and they will send you a notice before its time for your dog to get its next one. All my dogs have been on them for probably 3 years now. Never had any problems. I do that and give panacure about ⁴ times a year

I've heard a lot of folks go this route and be just fine, BUT, having worked in the vet med field when this shot came out, I got to hear a lot of negatives on it, so I never tried it. I just use Ivomec oral every month.
