Yep, that is the way it was. A couple of my older hunting buddies tell me similar stories. Its probably hard for some people to believe that that actually happened.

Back then folks free ranged hogs and cows. Ur mark was no different than a brand. U could even register ur mark with the livestock commission. Un marked hogs were up for grabs. There were folks that would steal hogs but it was the same as rustling.

Doing good I guess. Working like a crazy man here lately. Glad the temps are getting better so I can run these armadillo dogs a lil better. Gonna have to get together again and put some pork on the tailgate.

2nd Saturday each month is play day. 4th Saturday is comp bay. The pound pup is on a short plank. I don't think he's gonna make it. My lil bull dog I think may work. Haven't had her on a pig yet but if she catches I have full confidence I can send her from a lil ways out.

That's a pretty interesting part of history as a way of life. What's the year/time frame of this?
Kinda like free range cattle, hogs were the same? Just wondering, was it mostly the big floppy eared 500 pound domestic swine? Or was it a mixture of the slim Russian type "tear ya up" kinda hogs?

I am not exactly sure when it come to Arkansas. The end of free range was before my time. I know of a certain WMA here that u can still see the old fence and the signs proclaiming it the stock law fence. At that time from what I was told by my dad west of that fence was free range and east of the fence wasn't. East of the dance was the delta and row crop farming was the normal way of life. West of the fence cattle ranching and the timber industry was the most common ways of life. My dad told me years ago that at one point the ended free range and everyone scrambled to round up there cows and hogs. Because after a certain date they would be considered fair game of whoever caught them outside of there owners property. I can recall in the late 80's there were lots of cattle gaps on rural roads and in the hills. All of these are now gone except on the levee along the MS river. This free range livestock is the birthplace of what most of the wild hogs we have today in AR. The places with the most wild hogs are also the same places free range hogs lasted the longest or people continued to do so contrary to the law of the time.

The time frame would be before 1900 ,the free range law past in late 80 but didnt get enforced to the earlly 90 s ,the hogs were wild ,they would turn blooded boars,to the woods hog, were it would be more meat on the hogs, the blooded boars would get killed by the wild boars,we had just as many cows in the woods to,hogs didnt run far in them days, they bayed, wen we would work them we would always had a lead sow,she would lead the other hogs to the catch pen.
