The best thing I think someone can do who is new to the sport is pick a breed or two,buy a couple dogs that have been on some hogs allready. If you try to raise pups to turn to hog dogs it will be alot harder to bag pigs day in day out without a expirenced dog on hand.Haveing said that i beleive no one can have a hog dog without hogs. So you need to get out and talk to every land owner you can and remember to be curtious, you will probably here some no's but just keep it up. One of the most important parts of hog doggin is finding legal land that has what hogs want, little presure food and water.Texas is flooded with dogs just burning up in the kennal so pick your dogs wisly for what YOU need and good hunting to you!

Maybe some guys closer to you can take you hunting and get you some education!!! And always pull your own wait not just by haveing dogs-- everyway!! And remember if you get invited don't ask for your buddy to come and never ask the land owner if you can come back and hunt there!! Find your own places!!! If I can be any help on questions  just PM me will be more than happy to help you!! I breed dogs for myself but it is best if you are starting to buy a good set beware there are alot of people just trying to pawn junk off!!! The hog baying at Bremond might be a good place to learn I have never been but here say is good!

The one thing I will say is be carfull who you hunt with, their are a million videos floating around the net with every hunting style you could think of.In my opinion you can learn all the important things you need to get started from the Internet, Just like going fishing you want to own your own stuff so you dont have to wait for your buddys to want to go.I spent alot of time letting people try to tell me how to hunt when all along I knew what pack I wanted to run. Its fun to hunt with dogs but if you havnt been yet I agree with cward go with someone in your area and see how they do it, what breeds they like and take away what its worth, Just like fishing every body has a diffrent style and ultimitly that is what will deturmen their sucsess rate.

Have you hunted with other people who hunt with dogs? If you have any buddies that hunt with dogs, then i would suggest that you make some hunts with them. Most people would be more than happy to show you the inns and outs. Its a very addictive sport. I dream about hogs in my sleep. If i'm not hog hunting then i'm thinking about hog hunting and you'll catch the fever quick. LOL  Welcome to the game.

first welcome to hog hunting ist's TONS of fun!!

like everyone is saying get some experienced dogs then go to pups. i like pups because i like knowing exactly how they been treated and i know there ins and outs, but it's A LOT harder that way. next you need someone to go with you. you don't want to walk in to a bay and see a 300lb nasty butt boar and it's your fist time!!! Shocked

it took me two years to get a place that i can hunt anytime i want. it takes time LOTS of it. maybe you can get lucky and get some places close by. i would also hunt with as many different hunters and different ways as you can so you can see what you like.

before you buy a dog i would hunt with it several times. see how he hunts by himself and with other dogs. that way you know if it is ill...happy hunting and good luck..sorry so short got to go to my 4th football practice to day.

Hope you can find someone to hunt with around your parts.  Its a ton of fun.  Just go with someone that has some experience and that is going to follow the laws.  I'm sure you'll have a blast.

If you don't want to get addicted I say you better not go. It is like a drug to me. I am like djhogdogger I dream about hoghunting when I am not hunting. But I agree with the rest find you somewhere to hunt first then a finished dog or close to finished to start with. It is nothing in the world of hunting like it to me.

Good Luck
