We finally got the ok in Trinity county to use dogs to blood trail wounded deer this year. That being said where can I find a good dog and or can I convert my hog dog into a blood trailing dog? I recently got out of hog hunting this last year and all he does is lay around now. Would love to get him into blood trailing. Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated. Where could I possibly find deer dogs at that might be for sale? My buddy shot an 8 pt and a doe two days ago and we used his beagle puppy without any success. Im ready to get one thats all ready started or possibly give my old catahoula dog a crash course in blood trailing.

check out united blood trackers web site . the old cat might work until it jumps a hog while tracking   lol but they do make good dogs , the majority of folks are using  weinie dogs for trailing and they do an awesome job of it  .   but I think a good hound / cur cross in texas would do  .  I do have some 3/4 hound 1/4 cur pups here at the house I was going to work on blood , but do to my moms health I am not going to have the time .   they are ready to start now @ around 10 months old . if a man wanted to take a pair and work them on blood would be great for me .  [ not selling , for all the haters   lol  ]   just pm me on here for details .

I think Im going to start my cat on working a blood trail and yes their are a bunch of hogs in the area. I might be shooting myself in the foot with him. I have a 1/2 lab 1/2 mastiff puppy that Im thinking of trying to train for next year. I know Ive seen and heard that a lab is a good tracking dog. A biologist in a big hunting club by my house used a full blood lab to track all of their deer. I think this year will be an experimental year for me on  training and learning the deer tracking trade.

If your cats got the prey drive to hog hunt he should have it to blood trail. My cats trash on hogs skunks ,armidillos but if theres blood they stay with that.It should be instintive to stay with a wounded animal over a healthy one this is open to debate but I know  what I"ve seen with my dogs

Yea I will probably try him out this weekend and see what happens. Hopefully I can do a mock trail or two before then. I might be getting a blood hound in two weeks thats all ready started. That will probably be my best route to go.

x2 on what halfbreed has...10 months old is a good age...another good choice is mt cur...try a dog that is known for a good trailing nose...

I have a book on training bloodtrail dogs. this guy lives up north and trains them he works for the parks and wildlife finding deer shot eleagal and he works all season finding lost deer. he says in his book he has tried all breeds of dogs and found the best for him and what he trains and sells is the wire haired dashound. He said these dogs can take the rough terrain with briars an are deadly accurate trackers on old trails. he gets a big price on a finished dog.
