KevinN...I never use anti-inflammatory on my dogs...maybe I should...but if it doesn't look too serious I just use Cut-Heal 2 or 3 times a day...if it looks pretty bad I use cut heal and also give antibiotics for about a week...that combo works great for me...I continue cut heal until it looks like there won't be any infections setting in...

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog... A hunting dog is born not made...

He was gut cut....along with about 10 other pokes and a couple slices. I used a hose on him. Used an antiseptic spray, and stapled him up. Started him on injection penicillin and leftover pain killers and anti-inflamatories when I got home. Those ran out in about 3 days though. I've got a Doc that is nice enough to get me SOME stuff without an office visit. I told him the deal and he thought 500mg of cephalexin twice a day was necessary. I've got another week of that. Emmett is up and around...eating...bowells working. Some days you can't even tell (by his actions) there's much wrong with him. Others he limps a bit but still waggin his tail happy to see me. Of course he pulled his staples out but all cuts/pokes are healing. The gut cut is the biggest concern of course. I'll take a close look at it in a few days and see what kind of progress we've made.
On another note...my understanding of administration of penicillin was wrong. My Doc said there are 2 types. The most common...I got at tractor supply...Brand:Durvet - Penicillin injectable - penicillin g procaine injectable suspension. It is SUPPOSE to be administered - 1cc per 10lbs under the skin twice a day. The other (which I don't remember the name - starts with a b I think) is administered at 1cc per 30lbs injected into muscle once a day. That's what my Doc says anyway...so...
Anyway...as good as Emmett is doing I'm not gonna feel "safe" until that gut cut is TOTALLY healed.
Emmett is a young dog at 14 months and was starting to show me something special....some SERIOUS potential. I guess the question after he heals would be..."will he still work the same?"
What are some of y'all's experiences with this? Bulldog cut down...has he came back with the same work ethic?
I can only hope. But he's surprised me so far and if I had to bet money....I'd say he'll come back with the exact same skill he had before...but maybe even better BECAUSE of what he's been through.

I'd have to say that in most cases, a bulldog will come back just as strong, if not better, than before .
Hope he heals fast for ya.

Kevin, i'll bet a 20$ bill right now that it won't slow him down much at all....... When theyve got it, theyve got it! I wouldnt worry about it, get him back healthy and get back in the woods.

Never dealt with a gut cut before. How long should he stay out of the game?
Even after all signs of the cut were gone...I was gonna keep him out another couple months just to be safe. Make sure that lining is healed nice and strong.
